FRANKLIN LOSES NO-NO IN 8TH, SETTLES FOR 2-HITTER
M's, Jays Combine for 4 Hits

SEATTLE, Aug. 13 (AP) - Ryan Franklin took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before yielding a lead-off single to Greg Myers and settled for a two-hit complete game shutout as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-0, at Safeco Field.  Franklin is the first major league pitcher to work past the seventh inning with a no-hitter intact since July 8 when Billy Traber of the Cleveland Indians tossed 7 2/3 of no-hit ball against the New York Yankees.

Franklin was extremely efficient, tossing only 90 pitches, tied for third fewest in a complete game effort in the major leagues this season.  Franklin's opponent, Corey Thurman, held the Mariners without a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when Mark McLemore led off with a single.  Franklin and Thurman became the first duo to hold their opponents hitless past the fourth inning in a big league contest this year.

After McLemore singled to start the sixth for the Mariners, Ichiro Suzuki deposited a Thurman pitch into the right field seats for a two-run home run and a 2-0 Seattle lead.  That would be the only scoring of the game.

Franklin opened the contest by retiring the first 12 Blue Jays batters, then walked Carlos Delgado to start the fifth.  Delgado was immediately erased on a double play grounder off the bat of Myers.  Kevin Cash reached on an two-out error in the sixth but was left stranded.

After Myers ended Franklin's no-hit bid in the eighth, the Mariners right-hander set down Mike Bordick, Frank Catalanotto and Orlando Hudson to retire the side without incident.  In the ninth, Reed Johnson reached on a one-out single, bringing the potential tying run to the plate but Franklin got Eric Hinske on a fly to left and struck out Vernon Wells to end the game.  The Jays never managed to get a runner past first base.

The two clubs combined for only four hits in the game, the lowest total of safeties in a major league game this season.
