CUBS NOTCH 3 HITS IN 15 INNINGS, WIN GAME
O'Leary's 2-Run HR is Game-Winner
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (AP) - Troy O'Leary belted a two-run home run in the top of
the 15th inning, breaking a scoreless tie, and the Chicago Cubs hung on to post
a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The Cubs
managed just three hits over the course of the entire game, but still notched
the victory as the two clubs went scoreless through 14 frames--the longest such
stretch by two major league teams in a single game this season.
The contest featured a terrific pitchers duel between Mark Prior of the Cubs and
Kevin Brown of the Dodgers. Prior fired nine shutout innings, striking out
nine batters. Brown became the first major league pitcher this year to
complete 10 innings and just the second to work beyond the ninth inning; David
Wells of the New York Yankees worked one out into the tenth in a no-decision
against the Anaheim Angels on July 31. In all, Brown allowed just two hits
and struck out eight batters without issuing a walk. The Cubs never got a
runner past second base against Brown, who retired 13 consecutive batters at one
point.
There were no great scoring opportunities for either team until the top of the
15th. With reliever Paul Shuey on the mound for the Dodgers, Ramon
Martinez drew a lead-off walk. Sammy Sosa struck out, but O'Leary, who had
gone 0-for-5 with two strikeouts to that point, drove a 1-2 pitch over the
right-center field wall for a 2-0 Chicago lead.
Joe Borowski came on to close out the game in the bottom of the inning, but
immediately ran into trouble. Cesar Izturis bounced a lead-off single into
left field, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Dave Ross
struck out and Dave Roberts flied to center, but Jolbert Cabrera chased Izturis
to third by lining a single to right. Sean Green then singled to left,
scoring Izturis to cut the lead to 2-1, with Cabrera holding at second.
The potential winning run was now on base, but Borowski struck out Jeromy
Burnitz to end the game.
