JOHNSON, HALLADAY LEAD JAYS PAST RAYS
Johnson Goes 6-For-6
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 6 (AP) - Reed Johnson lashed out six hits and Roy
Halladay fired a complete game shutout as the Toronto Blue Jays mauled the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays, 9-0, at Tropicana Field. Johnson became the sixth major
league player this season to amass six hits in a single game and just the third
to do so in a nine-inning contest. Timo Perez of the New York Mets and
Juan Encarnacion of the Florida Marlins are the only other players to accumulate
six hits in a nine-inning game this year.
Halladay's strong effort was his second shutout and major league leading eighth
complete game of the season. Halladay has completed more games this year
than nine American League teams.
The Blue Jays ran out to an early lead and never looked back. Johnson led
off the game with a double, advanced to third on Mike Bordick's ground out and
scored on Vernon Wells' base hit. Toronto increased its lead to 3-0 in the
second inning when Eric Hinske and Bobby Kielty led off the frame with
consecutive two-baggers and, two outs later, Johnson doubled again.
The Jays blew the game open and chased Rays starter Joe Kennedy in the
fifth. Johnson opened the frame with his third hit, a single to center,
and advanced to second when Kennedy hit Bordick with a pitch. Wells walked
to load the bases and Carlos Delgado singled to right-center, scoring both
Johnson and Bordick with Wells holding at third. Chad Gaudin replaced
Kennedy and struck out Josh Phelps but Hinske doubled down the right field line,
scoring Wells and Delgado. Hinske was thrown out trying to advance to
third, but Toronto now held a 7-0 lead.
The Jays added single runs in the eighth and ninth on RBI singles off the bats
of Bordick and Johnson respectively to account for the final score.
Johnson finished 6-for-6, with two doubles, two runs scored and two driven in.
Halladay, meanwhile, handcuffed Tampa Bay throughout, en route to his 14th win
of the season. The Rays didn't advance a runner past first base until
Javier Valentin doubled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
He was left stranded when Jeff Liefer grounded out to third to end the
inning. Tampa Bay never had more than one baserunner in any inning.
