JAYS BLUDGEON BOSOX; BOSTON 'L' STREAK AT 8
Delgado Clubs ML Leading 32nd HR

TORONTO, July 10 (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays pounded out 18 hits off a quintet of Boston pitchers and rolled to a 16-7 victory over the Red Sox at SkyDome.  The loss was the eighth in a row for the Red Sox, who continue to lead the American League East by 10 1/2 games, pending the outcome of the New York Yankees' match-up with Cleveland this evening.  During the eight-game losing streak, Boston has been outscored 54-19.  The win finishes off a three-game sweep for the Blue Jays, who have now won four in a row and seven of their last ten games.  The 18 safeties matches the second highest total of the season in a single game for Toronto.  The 16 runs matches the team's high mark of the year set on June 13 against the Chicago Cubs.

The Red Sox actually scored first, in the opening inning, when Trot Nixon led off with a double and scored one out later on Nomar Garciaparra's single.

But the Jays seized control of the game in the second, scoring four times off Boston starter Ramiro Mendoza.  With one out, Eric Hinske doubled and then scored on Reed Johnson's single to center.  Gabe Kapler's throw to the plate was wild and the error allowed Johnson to advance to second.  Orlando Hudson's base hit to left moved Johnson to third and Chris Woodward's single scored Johnson.  Kapler again tried to throw a runner out--this time it was Hudson advancing to third--and again his throw was errant, allowing Hudson to score and Woodward to move to second base.  Shannon Stewart flied out and Frank Catalanotto was walked intentionally, but Vernon Wells laced a single, scoring Woodward and giving Toronto a 4-1 lead.

The Blue Jays broke the game open for good with four more runs in the third inning.  Tom Wilson and Hinkse drew back-to-back walks to open the frame and Johnson doubled to the right-center field gap, scoring both runners for a 6-1 Toronto advantage.  Mendoza was lifted in favor of Jason Shiell who retired Hudson on a grounder to short.  But any thoughts of escaping further damage in the inning were dashed when Woodward drove a pitch over the right field wall for a two-run homer and an 8-1 lead.

The Red Sox countered with three runs in the fourth on a two-bagger off the bat of David Ortiz and a two-run double by Kevin Millar, but the Jays got all three tallies back in their half of the same inning on Hinske's three-run bomb into the second level of seats in right to give Toronto an 11-4 lead.

Boston never threatened to get back in the game from this point on.  The Jays tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Red Sox pushed across a pair of consolation runs in the ninth to account for the final score.

After a charmed existence that lasted for almost the entire first half of the season, the Red Sox are reeling, having dropped 13 of their last 17 games.  They will try to stem the tide by concluding the final week before the All-Star break with a three-game series at Detroit against the American League's worst team.
