BEHIND PETTITTE, YANKS SHUT OUT BOSOX FOR 2ND STRAIGHT DAY
Pride Breaks Scoreless Tie with HR in Debut
NEW YORK, July 6 (AP) - Andy Pettitte fired a six-hit complete game shutout and
the New York Yankees went on to defeat the Boston Red Sox, 4-0, at Yankee
Stadium. The Yankees have now won the first three contests of the
four-game series; New York will go for the sweep tomorrow. The victory was
the fourth in a row for the Yankees overall and moved the club to a season-best
six games over the .500 mark; the Yankees have managed a 28-12 record in their
last 40 games. The Red Sox have dropped four in a row and have lost nine
of their last 13 contests. The four-game losing streak is the team's
longest of the season to date.
It was the second consecutive shutout that the Yankees have handed the Red Sox;
Roger Clemens and three relievers whitewashed Boston on seven hits
yesterday. The Red Sox had gone the first 84 games of the season without
being blanked.
Pettite and Boston starter John Burkett matched scoreless innings until the
bottom of the seventh. The best scoring chance for the Red Sox came in the
fifth when, with one out, Gabe Kapler blooped a double down the right field line
and advanced to third on Jason Varitek's deep fly ball to left. But
Pettite struck out Damien Jackson to end the inning and the threat.
The Yankees advanced runners to second base in the second, fourth and sixth
innings but would-be rallies all stalled at that point.
The seventh appeared to be going no better for New York. Burkett retired
Robin Ventura on a grounder to third and struck out Karim Garcia to open the
inning but recently recalled Curtis Pride, making his 2003 season debut, drilled
a 1-1 offering deep over the center field wall for a 1-0 Yankees lead.
Pettitte yielded a two-out single to Jackson in the top of the eighth but held
the Red Sox off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the inning, Boston manager Grady Little brought Byung-Hyun Kim
on in relief to start the frame. After retiring Derek Jeter on a fly ball,
Kim hit Jason Giambi with a pitch. Juan Rivera came on to run for Giambi
and advanced to second on Ruben Sierra's ground out to short. Hideki
Matsui then lined the first pitch he saw to the wall in right-center for a
double, plating Rivera to make the score 2-0. Kim tried to pitch carefully
to Jorge Posada but made a mistake with a 2-1 pitch and Posada deposited it into
the right field bleachers for a two-run home run and a 4-0 New York lead.
That was more than Pettitte needed. After retiring Bill Mueller on a fly
ball to start the ninth, he surrendered a single to Nomar Garciaparra. But
Manny Ramirez rolled into an around-the-horn double play to end the game.
Despite the recent reversal of fortune for the two teams, the Red Sox still lead
the second place Yankees by 13 game in the American League East.
