HILLENBRAND BELTS 3 HRS AS D-BACKS POUND ROCKIES
14 TB Ties ML Single Game High

DENVER, June 30 (AP) - On the day that Ray Durham became the fourth major leaguer to hit three home runs in a game this season, Shea Hillenbrand became the fifth.  Hillenbrand added a double to his trio of long balls and drove in five runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10-2 thumping of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.  The 14 total bases accrued by Hillenbrand sets a new National League mark this season and ties the major league high set by Nomar Garciaparra of the Boston Red Sox on May 14.  Garciaparra hit three home runs himself that day.

Hillenbrand's four safeties were part of a 16-hit Arizona attack that made a winner of starter Elmer Dessens (10-4).  Dessens worked seven strong innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits.

The Diamondbacks set the tone early, scoring four runs in the first inning off Darren Oliver (8-3).  Matt Kata reached on Jose Uribe's error to start the game and was doubled to third by Carlos Baerga.  Alex Cintron then singled both runners home to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.  After Luis Gonzalez forced Cintron at second on a grounder to third, Hillenbrand unloaded his first home run of the game, putting the Diamondbacks on top 4-0.

The Rockies scored a run back in the second on Charles Johnson's 15th home run of the season, but the Diamondbacks got it back in the third when, with two outs, Hillenbrand doubled and scored on Steve Finley's single to center.

Todd Helton's solo homer in the bottom of the third drew the Rockies to within 5-2 but that's as close as they would get.

In the top of the fifth, with two outs and the bases empty, Hillenbrand launched his second home run of the contest to put Arizona back on top by four runs.

The Diamondbacks blew the game open in the seventh and, once again, Hillenbrand was right in the middle of it.  Gonzalez led off with a base hit off reliever Matt Miller and Hillenbrand followed by belting his third home run of the game.  The long ball--which came on a 2-2 count--landed nearly halfway up the bleachers in left-center field and gave the Diamondbacks an 8-2 advantage.  Finley followed with his eighth home run of the year to make the score 9-2.

Hillenbrand had a shot at a fourth home run when he led off the top of the ninth against Jose Jimenez, but popped to short.  But Arizona still scored a final run, when David Dellucci and Rod Barajas hit back-to-back two-out doubles.
