DURHAM'S 3 HRS KEY GIANTS' ROUT OF CARDS
St. Louis Falls for 9th Time in Last 10

ST. LOUIS, June 30 (AP) - Ray Durham hit three home runs and drove in five and Jason Schmidt won his 10th game of the season as the San Francisco Giants cruised to a 9-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  It was the fourth straight loss for the Cardinals who have now dropped nine of their last 10 games and six of the last seven series they've played.

Durham becomes only the fourth major league player--and just the second National Leaguer--to hit three home runs in a single game thus far this season.  Nomar Garciaparra of the Boston Red Sox has accomplished the feat twice.  Manny Ramirez, also of the Red Sox, and Jose Guillen of the Cincinnati Reds are the other two players with three-home run games.  Durham is the fist player this season to hit his three home runs in consecutive plate appearances in the same game.  Six other players have hit three consecutive home runs spread out over multiple games.

The Giants took a lead they would never surrender in the very first inning off Cardinals starter Danny Haren (0-1), who was making his major league debut.  Pedro Feliz singled with two outs and the bases loaded to give San Francisco a 2-0 advantage.

Barry Bonds led off the top of the third inning with his 21st home run of the season to extend the lead to 3-0.

St. Louis pushed back with a run in the bottom of the third.  Haren led off with a single, and was erased by Bo Hart's fielder's choice grounder.  Orlando Palmeiro singled Hart to third and Albert Pujols' sacrifice fly put the Cardinals on the board.

But the Giants got that run back plus one in the fourth, ending Haren's day in the process.  Jose Cruz, Jr. led off with a walk and, one out later, Schmidt sacrificed him to second.  Then brought Durham to the plate and he hit his first home run of the contest, into the grandstand in right field, for a 5-1 Giants lead.

The Giants tacked on a single run in the fifth, when Cruz singled home Bonds.  Durham's second home run of the season--a solo shot to the opposite field--in the sixth put San Francisco ahead 7-1.

Durham capped his big day in the eighth.  With one out, Andres Galarraga pinch hit for Schmidt and drew a walk.  Batting right-handed for the first time in the game against lefty Jeff Fassero, the Giants second baseman picked out an 0-2 mistake and drove it into the bleachers in left-center field, accounting for the 9-1 final tally.

Schmidt, given the substantial early lead, cruised through seven innings, scattering six hits, all but one of them singles, to earn his sixth win in his last seven starts.  Jason Christiansen and Todd Worrell mopped up for the Giants.
