DURHAM'S WALK-OFF 2B SECURES HARD-FOUGHT GIANTS' 'W'
Williams Takes Shutout into 9th
SAN FRANCISCO, June 27 (AP) - Ray Durham's two-out double in the bottom of the
ninth inning scored pinch runner Carlos Valderrama from second base with the
game's only run, giving the San Francisco Giants a 1-0 victory over the Oakland
Athletics at Pacific Bell Park. The game-winner put the cap on an
exceptionally well-pitched ball game. Giants starter Jerome Williams took
a shutout into the ninth inning, but was replaced with one out and runners on
first and second. Williams' counterpart, A's starter Ted Lilly, tossed 6
1/3 innings of shutout ball before being removed.
The Giants had repeated opportunities to take the lead early on. San
Francisco left multiple runners on base four times in the first five innings of
the game. The best chance to break the deadlock probably occurred in the
fifth inning when Durham doubled to right-center field leading off the
inning. But Lilly, as he did throughout, stiffened, striking out both
Neifi Perez, who failed to get a bunt down, and Marquis Grissom. Barry
Bonds was walked intentionally and Benito Santiago rolled into a fielder's
choice to end the inning.
Lilly struck out nine batters in the game. In the seventh, he was removed
after retiring Williams on a ground out, having thrown 116 pitches.
Ricardo Rincon came on and set down Durham and Perez to end the inning.
Williams, meanwhile, gave the A's virtually nothing. Ramon Hernandez
doubled to the right-center gap with one out in the second inning, but Terrence
Long grounded to short and Mark Ellis flied to right to end the threat.
Hernandez singled to lead off the fifth, but was immediately erased by a double
play grounder.
The A's put two runners on base in the same inning for the first time in the
seventh. Miguel Tejada singled with one out and moved to second when Eric
Chavez grounded to second. Williams pitched around Hernandez, who had been
his nemesis, and walked him, leaving runners on first and second. But Long
flied to right to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth Williams set down Scott Hatteberg for the first out but
Tejada singled for the second time in the game. Chavez walked on a 3-2
pitch, putting runners on first and second with only one out. With
Hernandez due, San Francisco manager Felipe Alou summoned right-hander Felix
Rodriguez from the bullpen and he induced a weak grounder to short. The
runners advanced to second and third as Perez threw Hernandez out at
first. With lefty swinging Long due next and righty Mark Ellis on deck,
Alou chose to bring Scott Eyre in from the bullpen. A's manager Ken Macha
called on Adam Piatt to pinch hit for Long. Eyre won the battle as Piatt
struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch.
In the bottom of the frame, with Chad Bradford on the mound for Oakland, Pedro
Feliz led off by slashing a double down the left field line. Valderrama
came in to run for Feliz. Jose Cruz grounded out to short for the first
out of the inning and pinch hitter Francisco Santos flied to center. That
brought Durham to the plate. He worked ahead in the count 2-0 and then
picked out a Bradford fastball and roped it past first baseman Hatteberg and
down the right field line. Valderrama scored without a throw.
It was the 22nd 1-0 game of the year to date in the major leagues and the second
time in four days at Pac Bell; the Dodgers eked out a 1-0 win over the Giants on
June 23.
