WORKHORSE COLON PITCHES CHISOX PAST CUBS
14 K, 160-Pitch CG Effort Enables Rubber Game 'W'

CHICAGO, June 22 - Bartolo Colon struck out 14 batters, secured his fourth complete game of the season, and picked up his ninth win in 12 decisions as the Chicago White Sox snatched the rubber game of their three-game intercity, interleague series with the Chicago Cubs, 6-1.  The White Sox entered the contest with an exhausted bullpen, so it was a given that Colon would be called upon to work deep into the game, but Colon exceeded everyone's expectations, throwing a major league season high 160 pitches.  The four complete games ties Colon with Roy Halladay of Toronto and Livan Herandez of Montreal for the major league lead in that category.

Cubs starter Calos Zambrano matched Colon by holding his opponent to one run through five innings.  The White Sox scored in the top of the first when Frank Thomas belted his major league leading 29th home run of the year with two outs and the bases empty.  The Cubs countered in the bottom of the fourth when Colon lapsed into an inexplicable wild streak.  With two outs and the bases empty Colon walked Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou and Eric Karros to fill the sacks. Lenny Harris then reached on a swinging bunt to the right side of the infield, scoring Sosa to tie the game.  Damian Miller struck out to end the inning.

The White Sox blew the game open in the sixth.  Willie Harris led off by drawing a free pass and then stole second base.  D'Angelo Jimenez dropped down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Harris to third with one out.  After falling behind Frank Thomas 3-0, Zambrano walked him intentionally to set up a possible inning-ending double play but Magglio Ordonez foiled the strategy by lining a single to center.  Harris scored to put the White Sox on top, 2-1, and Thomas stopped at second.  Zambrano then hit Carlos Lee with a pitch to load the bases.  Jose Valentin followed by looping a single to center, scoring Thomas and Ordonez.  Joe Crede struck out, but Miguel Olivo capped the scoring by driving home Lee on a single to right.  Colon struck out to finally end the frame but the White Sox held a 5-1 lead.

The White Sox added a sixth run in the eighth.  Crede tripled off reliever Mike Remlinger, who was replaced by Kyle Farnsworth, but Olivo hit a sacrifice fly to left and the lead was 6-1.

Colon, meanwhile, was mowing down the Cubs.  He fanned eight batters through four innings, including five in a row at one point--the second time Colon has fanned five straight batters in a game this season--and 11 through five frames.  The 14 strikeouts overall is tops in a single game by an American League pitcher this season.  The previous high mark was 12, held by Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite, both of the New York Yankees.

The Cubs and White Sox will meet again, at U.S. Cellular Field, for a three-game series beginning June 28.
