HERNANDEZ OUTDUELS HALLADAY IN SHOWDOWN NORTH OF BORDER
Wilkerson's 1st Inning Long Ball Only Scoring
MONTREAL, June 22 (AP) - Livan Hernandez and Roy Halladay locked up in one of
the season's best pitching duels to date with Hernandez and his Montreal Expos
teammates coming out on top with a 2-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at
Olympic Stadium. Hernandez fired Montreal's second complete game shutout
this month; Tomo Ohka turned the trick against the Anaheim Angels on June 3 in
San Juan. It was the fourth complete game of the year for Hernandez, tops
among National League hurlers and tied for the major league lead with Bartolo
Colon of the Chicago White Sox.
Halladay was sharp as well, but surrendered two first inning runs. Envy
Chavez struck out, but Jamie Carroll laced a one-out double to left-center
field. Halladay then fanned Orlando Cabrera for the second out, but Brad
Wilkerson followed by launching his eighth home run of the year on an 0-2
Halladay mistake, giving the Expos a 2-0 advantage.
That was all the scoring in the entire game. Hernandez (5-5) was
absolutely masterful, never allowing a Blue Jays baserunner past first
base. Toronto had a base hit in three consecutive innings beginning with
the second, but could do nothing with them. In the fifth, Hernandez hit
Chris Woodward with a pitch with one out, but the Jays stranded him at
first. It was the final Toronto baserunner of the contest as Hernandez
retired the last 14 batters he faced.
The Expos had far more scoring opportunities against Halladay, including the
third inning. Carroll drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on
Cabrera's ground out to short. Wilkerson struck out but Edwards Guzman
lined a single to left field. Carroll tried to score but Frank Catalanotto
cut him down at the plate to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ron Calloway led off with a single and stole
second. Henry Mateo struck out Calloway took third on Brian Schneider's
fly ball to deep center. Hernandez, however, couldn't aid his own cause
and flied out to right to end the inning.
Halladay didn't allow another baserunner, retiring the final 11 batters he faced
before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth, but his teammates were
unable to solve Hernandez.
