REDS GO SOLO, DO IN CUBS
Stinnett's 2 Blasts Back Haynes' Strong Effort
CINCINNATI, June 18 (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds hit five solo home runs en route
to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ballpark. The
long balls accounted for all five of Cincinnati's runs, making the Reds the
first team in the major leagues this year to score five or more runs and have
all of those tallies accounted for by solo homers.
Jimmy Haynes (1-3) was the beneficiary of the power display, pitching into the
eighth inning for the first time this season. Haynes held the Cubs at bay,
allowing just one run on four hits.
Haynes and Cubs starter Kerry Wood (7-6) matched scoreless frames until the
bottom of the fourth when, with one out, Adam Dunn belted his National League
leading 24th home run of the year. Kelly Stinnett followed immediately
with his third long ball of the season, giving the Reds a 2-0 lead.
The Reds increased their advantage in the fifth when Jose Guillen led off the
inning with his 17th home run of the season. Stinnett's second homer of
the game, coming with one out in the sixth, pushed the Cincinnati lead to 4-0.
Austin Kearns capped off the Reds home run festival in the eighth with a one-out
blast into the left field seats off reliever Antonio Alfonseca.
Haynes, meanwhile, held the Cubs in check until the sixth. Mark
Grudzielanek drew a lead-off walk and then stole second. Sammy Sosa's long
fly to right allowed Grudzielanek to advance to third and he scored on Moises
Alou's infield roller.
The Cubs threatened to get back into the game in the eighth. Trailing 4-1,
pinch hitter Corey Patterson and Tom Goodwin led off the inning with consecutive
singles, causing Reds manager Bob Boone to replace Haynes with reliever Chris
Reitsma. Reitsma promptly induced Grudzielanek to bounce into an around
the horn double play and retired Sosa on a fly to left to end the threat.
He then went on to toss a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.
