BROWN, DODGERS PREVAIL OVER GIANTS IN PITCHERS DUEL
Jordan's Walk-Off Plates Green in 9th
LOS ANGELES, June 17 (AP) - Brian Jordan's two-out single off Joe Nathan scored
Shawn Green with the winning run as the Los Angeles Dodgers slipped past the San
Francisco Giants, 2-1, before a crowd of 49,191 at Dodger Stadium. The hit
made a winner of Kevin Brown, who was brilliant as he turned in the Dodgers'
first complete game of the season. Brown allowed just one run on four
hits. Giants starter Jesse Foppert was nearly as effective tossing seven
shutout innings before being nicked for a run in the eighth.
Neither club had a good scoring opportunity until the home half of the seventh
when Green lined a one-out single off Foppert. Jordan followed with a base
hit of his own to center field but Marquis Grissom gunned down Green at third
base. Daryl Ward then rolled out to third to end the stillborn threat.
The Giants broke the scoreless deadlock in the very next half-inning. Rich
Aurilia opened the frame by reaching on a swinging bunt that Brown couldn't get
a glove on; the play was was scored as an infield hit. Benito Santiago's
soft ground out to short advanced Aurilia to second. Edgardo Alfonzo then
lined a single over the head of second baseman Alex Cora, scoring Aurilia with
the game's first run. Brown stiffened, striking out Jose Cruz, Jr. and
retiring Foppert on a fly to left field, but found himself behind in the contest
despite a sterling effort.
Adrian Beltre, however, turned the game around in a heartbeat, by taking
Foppert's 2-2 offering over the wall in left-center field to lead off the bottom
of the eighth, tying things back up. Foppert retired the rest of the side
in order, keeping the score even through eight.
With one out in the top of the ninth, J.T. Snow rolled a single between first
and second and was replaced by speedy pinch runner Marvin Benard. But Ray
Durham followed by lining out to shortstop Cesar Izturis who caught Benard off
first base for a double play to extinguish the threat.
Jason Christiansen came on in relief of Foppert for the Giants in the bottom of
the ninth and retired pinch hitter Mike Kinkade on strikes and Lo Duca on a fly
to center. Green, however, roped a double into right-center field,
bringing the right-handed swinging Jordan to the plate and causing Giants
manager Dusty Baker to replace Christiansen with Nathan. Jordan worked the
count full and then grounded a single through the middle, scoring Green without
a throw.
