HUDSON FIRES GEM; A'S POUND EXPOS
Tejada, McMillon Each Drive in 4
OAKLAND, June 15 (AP) - Tim Hudson became the first major league pitcher to win
11 games this season, tossing a two-hit complete game effort as the Oakland
Athletics crushed the Montreal Expos, 11-1, at Network Associates
Coliseum. After allowing three baserunners over the first two
innings--including yielding a run in the second--Hudson shifted to a higher gear
and retired the final 22 batters he faced. 22 in a row represents the
fourth longest such single-game streak in the big leagues this year.
During his no-hit victory over the San Francisco Giants on May 6, Marlins
right-hander Carl Pavano set down 26 consecutive batters.
Montreal's second inning run--scored by Fernando Tatis on Ron Calloway's
single--gave the Expos a short-lived lead, but the A's quickly responded in
their half of the same inning. Eric Chavez led off with a single off Javier
Vazquez and took second base when left fielder Brad Wilkerson misplayed the ball
for an error. Vazquez then fumbled Ramon Hernandez's roller for another
miscue, putting runners on first and third. Terrence Long's grounder to
second scored the tying run and Billy McMillon's double plated Hernandez, giving
the A's a lead they would never relinquish. Mark Ellis' two-bagger scored
McMillon, giving Oakland a 3-1 advantage.
The A's added a run in the third when Miguel Tejada led off with a double and,
one later later, scored on a Chavez two-bagger.
Oakland blew the game open in the fifth when Erubiel Durazo led off with a
single and advanced to second on Hernandez's one-out walk. McMillon then
ripped his first home run of the season, just inside the right field foul pole,
to give the A's a 7-1 lead.
The A's capped the scoring in the eighth when Tejada belted a grand slam off
reliever Rocky Biddle, accounting for the 11-1 final score. Tejada and
McMillon each drove in four runs for Oakland. With 16 safeties in the
game, the A's cleared the 15-hit mark for the sixth time this year.
Hudson's effort represents only the 12th time in the major leagues this season,
in 2032 opportunities, that a pitcher has tossed a complete game and allowed two
hits or fewer.
