MARLINS POUND OUT 25 HITS IN ROUT OF RANGERS
Encarnacion's 6 Hits Leads Attack; 3 Fish Drive in 4-Plus

ARLINGTON, Tex., June 14 (AP) - The Florida Marlins hammered out a major league season high 25 hits en route to an 18-5 pasting of the Texas Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington.  Right fielder Juan Encarnacion became just the second major leaguer this year to accrue six hits in a nine-inning game.  Timo Perez of the New York Mets accomplished the feat in a 13-3 victory over the Montreal Expos on April 13 in San Juan in the contest with the previous high mark in hits by a team--the Mets banged out 24 that day.

Three Marlins players drove in at least four runs; Derek Lee knocked home five while Ivan Rodriguez and Mike Lowell each drove in four.  Rodriguez was 5-for-6, including a pair of doubles and three runs scored; Lowell was 4-for-4 including a two-run home run, his 18th long ball of the year, and three runs scored.  Lee was 3-for-5 including his 16th home run of the season, a three-run clout.

The Marlins put the game away early, scoring four runs in the top of the first off Rangers starter Ismael Valdes.  Two of the runs were unearned, stemming from a catcher's interference call that put lead-off man Juan Pierre on base to begin the game.  Rodriguez, Lowell, Lee and Alex Gonzalez all drove in first inning runs.

Florida added three more runs in the second on a Rodriguez RBI single and Lowell's two-run home run, chasing Valdes from the game.  But it didn't matter, as the Marlins scored four more times in the third, officially making the game a laugher.  Florida sent 25 batters to the plate in the first three frames.  The Rangers never drew any closer than eight runs from that point on.

The onslaught was more than enough for Marlins starter Tommy Phelps (3-0), who allowed three runs in five innings to secure the victory.

Florida put a crooked number on the scoreboard in six of their nine innings.  The 18 runs scored ties the high mark by a National League team this year and is the most scored by any team in an interleague game thus far this season.  The top mark for the season as a whole is 19, set by the Anaheim Angels, also against the Rangers in Arlington, on April 16.  This is the third time this year that Texas has allowed more than 15 runs in a nine-inning game.
