13-RUN INNING KEYS JAYS ROUT OF CUBS
Wells Homers Twice in 4th, Drives in 7

TORONTO, June 13 (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays' offense exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning, en route to a 16-5 pasting of the Chicago Cubs at SkyDome.  The 13-run inning is the second highest tally in a single frame in the major leagues this season.  The Anaheim Angels erupted for 14 runs in the third inning of a 19-2 romp over the Texas Rangers on April 16 in Arlington.

Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells became the first player this season to hit two home runs in a single inning, driving in seven runs in the process.

The Cubs took a 3-0 lead into the fateful bottom of the fourth, having scored a run in the first on Moises Alou's RBI ground out and two in the second when Toronto starter Kelvim Escobar issued consecutive bases loaded walks to Alex Gonzalez and Corey Patterson.

Chicago starter Kerry Wood faced the minimum nine hitters through three innings and was cruising along when things unraveled quickly in the fourth.  Reed Johnson and Frank Catalanotto began the frame with back-to-back singles and Wells quickly tied the game with a towering home run to straight away center field.  The three-run shot tied the game, but the Jays were just getting started.  Carlos Delgado singled through the box and advanced to second when Grey Myers drew a free pass.  Josh Phelps lined to left for the first out of the inning, but Orlando Hudson worked a walk, loading the bases.  Chris Woodward then slashed a double past third baseman Ramon Martinez, scoring Delgado and Myers for a 5-3 lead, with Hudson advancing to third.  Howie Clark followed by grounding a single through the middle, scoring both baserunners and putting Toronto on top, 7-3.  That was the end of the day for Wood; he was replaced by Todd Wellemeyer.  The change did the Cubs absolutely no good.  Johnson and Catalanotto greeted Wellemeyer with back-to-back infield hits, filling the bases for Wells, who promptly crushed a grand slam into the seats in straight away left to up the Blue Jays advantage to 11-3.  Delgado added insult to injury by following the Wells blast with one of his own.  The Toronto first baseman's 22nd home run of the season reached the second level in right field and increased the Toronto lead to nine runs.  And still the Jays weren't done.  Myers drew a walk and Phelps tripled to right-center, capping the scoring at 13 runs.  Wellemeyer finally struck out Hudson and retired Woodward on a ground ball to end the inning.  The Jays sent 17 batters to the plate and amassed 11 hits and three walks in addition to scoring 13 runs.

The Cubs picked up a pair of consolation tallies in the top of the seventh on Corey Patterson's two-run homer to right, but the Jays more than countered by scoring a single run in the bottom of the seventh on Johnson's RBI single and two in the eighth when Myers' fifth home run of the year followed Delgado's double.

The victory was the fifth straight for the Blue Jays who now stand at .500 for the first time since May 7.
