ROX, ROYALS SPLIT DH IN COORS
FIELD SPECIAL
Vaughn Belts Slams in Both Games; Ibanez Extends
Streak to 33
DENVER, June 7 (AP) - The Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals split a
doubleheader at Coors Field--and scored a total of 49 runs in the process. The
Rockies won the opener, 14-6, breaking open a tight game with six runs in the
bottom of the eighth inning. The Royals bounced back in the nightcap,
outslugging Colorado 17-12. The two clubs combined to hammer out 60 hits over
the two games, including 14 doubles, four triples and nine home runs.
Greg Vaughn hit a pair of grand slams, one in each game, for the Rockies. The
blast in the opener was of the pinch hit variety and came as part of Colorado's
big eighth inning. Jose Hernandez was 5-for-9 with a pair of home runs and six
runs batted in for the Rockies over the course of the doubleheader.
Raul Ibanez had a safety in each contest, thus extending his major league best
hitting streak to 33 games. Geronimo Berroa had a 5-for-8 day, including a pair
of triples, a home run and six runs driven in for the Royals.
The Rockies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and
appeared poised to coast to an easy win, but the Royals kept chipping away and
pulled to within 7-6 with a three-run top of the seventh on Aaron Guiel's
two-run triple and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Desi Relaford. But the Rockies
got a solo home run from Juan Uribe in the bottom of the inning to up their lead
to 8-6 and then exploded for six runs in the eighth to put the game away. Larry
Walker drove in a run with a double, Vaughn, pinch hitting for reliever Brian
Fuentes, belted the first of his two slams and Jay Payton capped the scoring
with a double to left.
In the nightcap, the teams exchanged hay-makers for the first three innings,
with the Rockies holding a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth. There were no
scoreless frames through three. Royals starter D.J. Carrasco didn't make it out
of the third inning, yielding seven runs on five walks and seven hits, including
a two-run homer to Preston Wilson. The Royals took the lead for good with three
runs in the fourth, all of them scoring on Geronimo Berroa's second home run of
the season. That ended the day for Rockies starter Todd Jones. Kansas City then
took what seemed like an insurmountable 13-7 lead with four more runs in the
fifth; Carlos Beltran's three-run homer was the big blow. It seemed like piling
on when Guiel's RBI double in the eighth made it 14-7. But in the bottom of the
eighth, Vaughn belted his second grand slam of the day, pulling Colorado to
within three runs at 14-11. The Royals simply shrugged and scored three more
runs in the ninth, on a run-scoring single off the bat of Beltran and Brent
Mayne's two-run double. The Rockies pushed across a consolation run in the
bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late.
The one pitcher who really performed well on this day was Brad Voyles of the
Royals, who replaced Carrasco in the third inning of game two and went on to
toss 4 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief, striking out seven, before being
lifted with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Voyles (1-0), was
credited with the win for Kansas City.
