OHKA, EXPOS TURN UP HEAT ON HALOS

SAN JUAN, P.R., June 3 (AP) - Tomo Ohka had compiled an earned run average of
nearly six through his first 11 starts of the season but turned in his best
effort of the year today, a six-hit complete game shutout as the Montreal Expos
whipped the Anaheim Angels, 6-0, at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, their home away from
home in San Juan. Ohka (4-5) hadn't worked past the seventh inning in any
of his prior starts, but was the epitome of efficiency against the Angels,
needing only 90 pitches in the complete game effort.
The Expos jumped on Anaheim starter Ramon Ortiz early. Endy Chavez led off
the bottom of the first inning with a home run, giving the Expos a lead they
would never surrender. Orlando Cabrera followed with a single, the first
of his three hits on the day, and, one out later, Vladimir Guerrero singled him
to second. Brad Wilkerson's deep fly to center advanced Cabrera to third
and Fernando Tatis followed with a run-scoring single to put Montreal on top,
2-0.
A two-out rally in the second inning gave the Expos a 3-run advantage.
Chavez started things off with a base on balls and stole second. Cabrera
then doubled into the left field corner, scoring Chavez.
Montreal's lead climbed to four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Guerrero
drew a lead-off walk and Wilkerson singled to right, advancing Guerrero to third
base. Jeff Liefer grounded into a double play, but Guerrero scored on the
play to make it 4-0.
Cabrera drove home another run off Francisco Rodriguez in the sixth. Brian
Schneider walked, was sacrificed to second by Ohka and then, one out later,
scored on Cabrera's second double of the game. Wilkerson's solo home run,
in the bottom of the seventh, capped the scoring.
Ohka, meanwhile, danced through the Angels lineup without damage. Ohka hit
Tim Salmon with a pitch with two outs in the first and then retired 15
consecutive batters before Jeff DaVanon ruined the no-hit bid with two outs in
the sixth inning. Adam Kennedy and pinch hitter Shawn Wooten led off with
consecutive singles in the eighth but Ohka retired the next three Anaheim
hitters without incident. In the ninth, Troy Glaus doubled with one out
and Scott Spezio singled him to third but, just as the Expos were beginning to
get the bullpen ready, Ohka induced a double play grounder off the bat of Bengie
Molina to end the game.
