SORIANO, PETTITTE STAR AS YANKS POUND BOSOX
Bombers Crush 5 HRs in Victory

NEW YORK, May 27 (AP) - It's been a rough season thus far for the New York Yankees, but they extracted a degree of satisfaction today at Yankee Stadium by roughing up the rival Boston Red Sox, 11-1, before a sellout crowd.  Alfonso Soriano and Jason Giambi both homered twice and Raul Mondesi went deep as well as the Yankees chased Boston starter Bruce Chen in the second inning.  Andy Pettitte, meanwhile, turned in his most impressive start of the year to date, holding the Red Sox to four hits and one run in eight innings while fanning 11.  The victory for Pettite (3-5) was his third in his last four decisions following an 0-4 start to the season.

The Yankees all but put the game away in the first inning.  Derek Jeter started the frame off by lining an infield single off Chen's glove and Hideki Matsui's single into the right field corner advanced Jeter to third.  Soriano then unloaded on a Chen change-up, depositing the ball into the monuments area in left-center field for a three-run home run.  Giambi followed that with a long ball of his own, off the upper deck facade in right for a 4-0 New York advantage.  After Jorge Posada fanned for the first out of the inning, Mondesi homered into the lower grandstand in left, just inside the foul pole, to put the Yankees ahead 5-0.

The Red Sox got a run back in the second when Shea Hillenbrand's RBI double plated Kevin Millar, who had singled to lead off the inning, but that was all the offense Boston would muster.

In the second, the Yankees got the run back plus one.  Todd Zeile led off with a walk and moved to second on Jeter's ground out.  Matsui flied out but Soriano doubled past Hillenbrand at third to score Zeile and Giambi followed with a single to center, scoring Soriano with the Yankees' seventh run of the game.

Soriano drove in his fifth run of the contest when his fourth inning sacrifice fly plated Matsui, who had tripled, and Matsui's fielder's choice in the fifth drove home Zeile, who had doubled earlier, with the ninth New York run of the game.

Giambi's second home run of the contest, his 19th of the season, came in the sixth and accounted for the Yankees' 10th run and Soriano capped the scoring with his second blast of the game.  The home run came off Ramiro Mendoza in the eighth inning and was his 15th homer of the season.

The victory was the first of the season for the Yankees against Boston after four consecutive defeats to open the year.  New York still trails the Red Sox by 17 1/2 games in the American League East.
