BROWN FANS 14 PHILS IN 7 IP
Dodgers Hurlers K 17 in 5-1 Win

LOS ANGELES, Apr. 29 (AP) - Los Angeles starter Kevin Brown struck out 14 Philadelphia Phillies in just seven innings of work as the Dodgers went on to a 5-1 victory at Dodger Stadium.  The Los Angeles bullpen fanned an additional three Phillies as Dodgers pitchers combined to strike out 17 in nine innings, tying the single game mark for the season to date for a regulation contest.  The Arizona Diamondbacks struck out 17 Milwaukee Brewers--all of them by Curt Schilling--in a 3-2 victory in Phoenix on April 12.

Brown (3-3) committed what amounted to his only mistake of the game when he allowed a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning to Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins.  From that point on, he surrendered only two more hits, both of them singles.  He also struggled with his control at times, walking five batters.

After falling behind on Rollins' second long ball of the season, the Dodgers took the lead for good in their half of the opening frame against Phillies starter Randy Wolf.  Jason Romano, in the starting lineup for the first time this season, led off with a double down the right field line.  Paul Lo Duca followed with a walk and the runners advanced to second and third when Wolf uncorked a wild pitch.  Shawn Green followed by depositing his second home run of the season--a three-run blow--into the fifth row of seats down the right field line, giving Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage.  It was all Brown would need.

The Dodgers added some insurance in the fifth.  Adrian Beltre led off with a home run, upping the lead to three runs and back-to-back doubles off the bats of Jolbert Cabrera and Ceasr Izturis capped the scoring at 5-1.

Brown, meanwhile, was thoroughly overwhelming the Phillies.  He fanned at least one batter in every inning, and struck out the side in both the third and sixth frames.  At one point, beginning with the final out of the fifth, Brown whiffed five straight Philadelphia hitters, tying for the second longest such string in a big league game this year.  Curt Schilling of Arizona holds the longest strikeout streak at eight, against Milwaukee on April 12, the same game in which he struck out 17 batters.

Brown had tossed 115 pitches through seven innings so he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh by manager Jim Tracy.  Tom Martin worked a perfect eighth, striking out two more Phillies hitters, and Paul Quantrill fired a scoreless ninth, fanning one more, to account for the total of 17.
