1982 National League Championship Series

Montreal vs. San Francisco

Game 1, at Olympic Stadium:  Hammaker vs. Sanderson

GIANTS SCORE LATE, WIN OPENER
Reardon Fails in Save Opportunity

MONTREAL, Oct. 6 (AP) -- The San Francisco Giants scored solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings and slipped past the Montreal Expos in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series before a disappointed sellout crowd at Olympic Stadium.

Trailing 4-3, Chili Davis and Joe Morgan started off the top of the eighth with a single and a walk respectively against Woody Fryman.  Jeff Reardon replaced Fryman and induced Jack Clark to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.  But just when it appeared that Reardon would escape the jam, Reggie Smith doubled into the gap in left-center field, tying the game.

The Expos failed to score in the bottom of the inning and Milt May led off the ninth by tripling to right. Johnnie LeMaster's fly to right brought May home with what proved to be the winning run.  Gary Lavelle pitched around a passed ball and held Montreal scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, cementing San Francisco's win.

The Expos broke out on top in the bottom of the first on Gary Carter's three-run home run off Atlee Hammaker, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

But the Giants cut the deficit to two on Davis' solo homer in the fourth and then tied the game in the sixth on RBI singles by Dave Bergman and Davis.

The Expos retook the lead in the seventh when Jim Barr booted Tim Raines' two-out roller, plating Warren Cromartie.  But the lead was short-lived.

Davis was the man of the hour for the Giants, with three hits--including a home run--plus two runs scored and driven in.  Barr was credited with the win; Lavelle got the save.

Game 2, at Olympic Stadium:  Laskey vs. Rogers

SPEIER'S BLAST PACES 'SPOS
Montreal Evens Series Behind Rogers' CG

MONTREAL, Oct. 7 (AP) -- Chris Speier's three-run home run off Bill Laskey in the bottom of the sixth inning overcame a two-run deficit and the Montreal Expos evened the National League Championship Series with a 4-3 Game 2 win over the San Francisco Giants.

With the Expos trailing 3-1 Al Oliver led off the home half of the sixth with an opposite field single.  One out later, Tim Wallach singled to left, putting runners at first and second. Speier then launched an off-speed offering from Laskey well into the left field bleachers, putting the Expos on top by a run and sending the Olympic Stadium sellout crowd into a frenzy.

NL Cy Young Award candidate Steve Rogers, winner of 24 regular season games--top mark by a wide margin in all of Major League Baseball--made the Speier home run stand up, blanking the Giants over the final three frames while facing the minimum nine hitters en route to the complete game victory.  Laskey threw a complete game for San Francisco while absorbing the loss.

Montreal had drawn first blood on Oliver's leadoff home run in the second.  But the Giants took the lead on Darrell Evans' two-run third inning home run and increased their lead to two runs in the fourth when Milt May scored from third on Rogers' two-out wild pitch.  That set the stage for Speier's heroics.

Both starters were effective, if not overpowering, and the Expos made the most of their infield defense by turning three double plays--one each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings--squashing San Francisco threats.

With the series squared at one, the two teams will use a travel day to head west before meeting at Candlestick Park for Game 3.

Game 3, at Candlestick Park:  Gullickson vs. Gale

EXPOS TAKE GAME 3 WITH 8TH INNING RUN
Gullickson's CG Moves Club One Win Away From Series

MONTREAL, Oct. 9 (AP) -- Tim Wallach's eighth inning sacrifice fly plated Warren Cromartie with the winning run and the Montreal Expos moved to within a game of the World Series with a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park.

Giants starter Rich Gale was still on the hill when the eighth inning opened with Cromartie's single.  Andre Dawson grounded to first, advancing Cromartie to second.  Gale walked Al Oliver intentionally to bring up Gary Carter, who blooped a single in front of Chili Davis in center field, loading the bases.  Greg Minton came on to replace Gale with Wallach due.  The Montreal third baseman hit a deep fly to center that drove Davis to the edge of the warning track.  Cromartie tagged and scored easily to put the Expos up a run.  No one reached base for either club for the duration of the game.

The Expos put a run on the board in the very first inning.  Tim Raines singled to lead off the game and promptly stole second.  Gale walked Cromartie to put runners on first and second.  Andre Dawson flied to shallow center for the first out but Al Oliver walked to fill the bases.  Carter then lifted a fly ball to Jack Clark in left to score Raines.

Montreal added a run in the third.  Cromartie led off with a single and one out later Oliver ripped a double to the right-center field gap.  Cromartie scored all the way from first to put the Expos up 2-0, but Oliver was thrown out trying to advance to third.

The Giants tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth.  Reggie Smith led off with a line drive that just cleared the right field fence for a home run in the fourth.  In the fifth, Expos starter Bill Gullickson fanned the first two hitters, but then walked Chili Davis and yielded a single to right to Joe Morgan, advancing Davis to third.  Clark's opposite field single then plated Davis, tying the game, leading to the Wallach sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Gullickson went the route for Montreal, allowing two runs while scattering seven hits and inducing three double play balls to snuff out would-be San Francisco rallies.  Gale pitched effectively for the Giants, but tired a bit in the eighth.

The Giants now have their backs against the wall, trailing the Expos 2-1.  The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Candlestick. Montreal will go with Charlie Lea while San Francisco will counter with Game 1 starter Atlee Hammaker.

Game 4, at Candlestick Park:  Lea vs. Hammaker

GIANTS EVEN SERIES, FORCE 5TH GAME
Two-run 8th Inning Breaks Tie

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 10 (AP) -- The San Francisco Giants broke an eighth inning tie with a pair of runs and evened their best-of-five National League Championship Series with a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Expos in Game 4.  Relievers Jim Barr and Gary Lavelle combined for 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief.  Barr has been credited with the victory in both Giants' wins in the series while Lavelle has saved both of Barr's decisions.

The Expos broke on top with a run in the first off San Francisco starter Atlee Hammaker.  With two outs, Andre Dawson and Gary Carter whacked consecutive doubles to plate the game's first run.

The Giants responded quickly, however, taking the lead with single runs in the second and third frames.  Reggie Smith led off the bottom of the second with a single and two outs later moved to second on Milt May's base hit.  Johnnie LeMaster followed with a grounder through the box and over the second base bag to score Smith.  Jack Clark's two-out solo home run in the third moved the Giants up by a run.

Montreal knotted the game with a two-out rally in the fifth that started when Hammaker committed the cardinal sin of walking his counterpart, Expos starter Charlie Lea--an .085 hitter during the regular season--and then compounded his mistake by balking Lea to second.  Tim Raines followed with a line single to center, advancing Lea to third and Chris Speier followed with a base hit of his own, also to center, tying the game.

The score remained tied at two until the bottom of the eighth.  With Lea still on the mound, Chili Davis popped to the catcher, but Joe Morgan followed with a double to the left-center field gap and Jack Clark tripled off the right field fence to give the Giants the lead, 3-2.  With a light rain falling, Woody Fryman replaced Lea and yielded a sacrifice fly to Smith, providing San Francisco with an insurance run.

Lavelle entered the game to start the ninth and set the Expos down in order to preserve the victory.

The clubs will meet for the fifth and deciding game tomorrow at Candlestick Park with each team's respective ace--Steve Rogers for the Expos and Bill Laskey for the Giants--expected to start.

Game 5, at Candlestick Park:  Rogers vs. Laskey

VENABLE'S CLUTCH DOUBLE PUNCHES GIANTS SERIES TICKET
Expos Lament Missed Opportunities

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11 (AP) -- Max Venable's double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored pinch runner Guy Sularz from first base with what proved to be the winning run and Greg Minton fired 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief as the San Francisco Giants slipped past the Montreal Expos, 3-2, in the deciding fifth game of the National League Championship Series.  Game 5 site Candlestick Park will serve as the venue when the Giants open the World Series against the American League champion Baltimore Orioles on October 13.

In a tightly contested game throughout, the Giants scored first on Reggie Smith's opposite field home run off Expos starter Steve Rogers leading off the bottom of the second inning.

Montreal tied the game in the fourth when Andre Dawson and Al Oliver smacked consecutive singles off Giants starter Bill Laskey. Gary Carter's sacrifice fly to left evened the score.

The Giants regained the lead in the fifth.  Johnnie LeMaster led off with an infield single and advanced to second on Laskey's sacrifice bunt.  Chili Davis' grounder to second moved LeMaster to third with two outs and then Joe Morgan lined a clutch single that dropped in front of right fielder Warren Cromartie, scoring LeMaster and making it 2-1.

The Expos re-knotted the game in the top of the seventh, but blew a golden opportunity to seize the lead.  Rogers bounced a one-out single into center field and Tim Raines followed with a base hit of his own to put runners at first and second.  Warren Cromartie then roped a double just over the head of right fielder Jack Clark.  Rogers scored, but Raines, who had to make sure the ball wouldn't be caught, was held at third.  At that point, San Francisco pulled a double switch, putting Minton on the mound and moving Venable into left field in the ninth slot in the lineup.  Both changes were to prove significant to the Giants' fortunes.  With the number three and four hitters due up in what was now a tie game, San Francisco was forced to pull the infield in.  Minton induced Dawson to ground sharply to Morgan at second who cut down Raines at the plate.  With runners now at first and third and two outs, Oliver was walked to fill the bases and Minton followed by striking out Carter, bringing the partisan crowd to its feet with an out-sized roar.

Having staunched the Expos' momentum, the Giants scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the bottom half of the inning.  Milt May led off the frame with a line single over Rogers' head. He was replaced at first by the little-used Sularz who was making his first NLCS appearance.  LeMaster's attempt to advance the runner failed when he popped up a bunt attempt that Rogers snagged easily.  But Venable, who had entered the game as part of the double switch in the previous half-inning, followed with a double to the right-center field gap. Sularz motored all the way around to score from first, putting the Giants on top 3-2.

The Expos' last gasp came in the top of the eighth.  Tim Wallach led off the inning against Minton with a single.  Chris Speier's bunt attempt failed; new catcher Bob Brenly grabbed the pop up in foul ground.  Pinch hitter Terry Francona rolled into a fielder's choice, but another pinch hitter, Jerry White, followed with a double down the right field line. Clark cut the ball off and his powerful arm forced Francona to hold at third.  Raines grounded out to first to end the threat, stranding the would-be tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

Minton retired Montreal in order in the ninth, with Oliver lining to Clark to end the game.

After posting sellout crowds of better than 58,000 over the weekend, the Giants might have been a bit disappointed when "only" 41,181 attended on this Monday night. But for a team that averaged barely 18,000 per game during the regular season and didn't come close to selling out a single regular season contest including its opener, the 41,000-plus on the same night that the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers were in action on television, were a welcome sight.
