It's Reggie to the Rescue
9th Inning Blast Gives AL Mid-Summer Classic Victory
MONTREAL, July 13 (AP) -- Reggie Jackson belted a two-out, two-run home run off Steve Carlton as the American League recovered after blowing a 6-1 lead to beat the National League, 8-6, in the All-Star Game at Olympic Stadium.
Jackson's home run earned the California Angels outfielder game MVP honors.
The National League started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an unearned run off AL starter Dennis Eckersley. With two outs, third baseman Doug DeCinces booted Al Oliver's grounder for an error. Pedro Guerrero doubled Oliver to third and then Dale Murphy singled sharply to left. Oliver scored, but left fielder Rickey Henderson threw Guerrero out at the plate to end the inning.
Eddie Murray led off the top of the second with a long home run over the right-center field fence to even the score at one.
In the fourth, the American League began to take charge. Facing Mario Soto, DeCinces led the inning off with a walk. Tom Brunansky followed with a walk and Carlton Fisk drove left fielder Murphy to the wall with a long fly ball; DeCinces tagged and advanced to third on the play. Soto then walked Bobby Grich to load the bases. Tom Paciorek, pinch hitting for pitcher Jack Morris, laced a double into the left field corner, scoring DeCinces and Brunansky and moving Paciorek to third. Soto was able to escape further damage, but the AL led 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, the American seized what appeared to be complete command of the contest. Fernando Valenzuela was on the hill for the NL and the American Leaguers jumped all over him. With one out, pinch hitter Gorman Thomas doubled and Toby Harrah singled him home. Pinch hitter Dwight Evans then doubled Harrah home to put the AL up 5-1. Fisk grounded to short, moving Evans to third and Grich then capped the inning's scoring with another base hit, giving the AL a 6-1 advantage.
The National League stayed in the game by cutting into the AL lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jim Clancy came on for the AL and retired the first two batters he faced, but pinch hitter Jason Thompson walked and Dickie Thon followed with a long home run to right-center, cutting the American League lead to three runs.
The score was still 6-3 in the middle of the seventh inning when the National League erased the remainder of what had once been a five-run AL lead. LaMarr Hoyt was the victim of the come back and yielded a leadoff single to Andre Dawson. Pinch hitter Chris Chambliss then walked, bringing the tying run to the plate with no one out. Tim Raines was sent up as a pinch hitter and flied to Gary Ward at the edge of the center field warning track. Dawson moved to third, leaving runners at the corners with one out. But Jason Thompson crushed Hoyt's first pitch deep over the right field wall and into the stands, sending the sellout crowd at Olympic Stadium into a frenzy. The National League had come all the way back to tie the score at six. Hoyt retired the next two batters, but the damage had been done.
Joaquin Andujar tossed a scoreless top of the eighth for the NL and Tippy Martinez matched him in the bottom half of the inning for the AL.
Steve Carlton came on for the NL in the top of the ninth and promptly fanned Ben Oglivie to start the inning. Lance Parrish folllowed by flying to right, but George Brett lined a double into the left-center field gap, which set the stage for Reggie Jackson's heroics. Reggie didn't disappoint, belting a Carlton fastball to virtually the same spot as Thompson had deposited his longball in the seventh inning. Carlton retired Ward to end the frame, but the National League now trailed, 8-6.
Goose Gossage came on to close the game out for the AL and he completed the task with ease, fanning Dawson, retiring Chambliss on a soft line drive to second and striking out Raines to end the contest. Gossage was awarded with the save and Martinez was credited with the win. Carlton, of course, absorbed the defeat.
