ALLEN (3), SCHMIDT (2) COMBINE FOR 5 HRS
2nd 3-HR Game at Jarry Park in 4 Days

MONTREAL, Sept. 26 (AP) - Richie Allen belted three home runs in a game for the second time this season and teammate Mike Schmidt hit a pair of long balls of his own as the Philadelphia Phillies whipped the Montreal Expos 8-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Jarry Park.  It was the eighth time that a major league player has hit three home runs in a game this year, but Allen, who also hit three home runs in a May 26 win over the New York Mets, is only the second to accomplish the feat twice.  Dave Kingman of the Mets is the other.  Kingman's second three-run homer contest came just four days ago, on September 22, in a victory over the Expos at Jarry Park.  In fact, both of Kingman's three-homer games have come at Jarry Park; the first was on May 26.

The Phillies seized firm control of the contest in the very first inning with three runs off Expos starter Dan Warthen.  With two outs and the bases empty, Schmidt drove a Warthen offering into the left field bleachers to put Philadelphia ahead 1-0.  Warthen then walked Greg Luzinski and Allen drilled a home run of his own for a 3-0 advantage.

In the fourth, the Phillies added a fourth tally when Bob Boone doubled with one out, advanced to third on Larry Bowa's fly to center and scored when Lonborg aided his own cause with a two-out run-scoring single.

Montreal tried to keep it close, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth.  Wayne Garrett led off with a single and was forced at second on Andre Dawson's fielder's choice grounder, but Ellis Valentine's base hit gave the Expos runners at first and second with one out.  Earl Williams flied to the edge of the warning track in left, advancing Garrett to third, and then consecutive singles off the bats of Larry Parrish and Tim Foli scored Dawson and Valentine to cut the Phillies lead to 4-2.

But Allen's two-out solo home run in the fifth got one of the runs back and, with the score still 5-2, Allen greeted Bill Atkinson opening the eighth with his third long ball of the contest to put Philadelphia on top 6-2.  Schmidt capped the scoring in the ninth when he belted his second home run of the game with Dave Cash, who had singled, aboard.

Allen and Schmdit became the first pair of teammates this year to hit five home runs in one game.

Schmidt's two home runs give him 37 on the season, tying him atop the National League leader board with Rick Monday and George Foster.  Schmidt continues his September tear, making him the current favorite to win National League Player of the Month honors.  For the month thus far, Schmidt has homered 13 times--the most home runs by any player in either league in a single month this year--and driven home 26 runs; prior to September, Schmidt hadn't hit more than six home runs in any month.
