10-RUN 7TH PUSHES BUCS PAST 'SPOS
7 Straight Batters Reach Base During Uprising
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10 (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates overcame a 3-2 deficit with a
10-run bottom of the seventh inning and went on to defeat the Montreal Expos
12-3 at Three Rivers Stadium. There have only been three instances in the
National League this season where a team has scored double digit runs in a
single frame and each time the Pirates have been the team to do it. (Only
one team has scored 10 runs in an inning in an American League game--the New
York Yankees, who have done so once.)
The Expos scored first. In the top of the opening frame, Bombo Rivera led
off with the first of two triples and scored one out later on Ellis Valentine's
sacrifice fly. Montreal upped its lead to 2-0 in the third when Rivera
doubled with two outs and scored on Tim Foli's single.
The Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Richie Hebner drew a
lead-off walk from Expos starter Woodie Fryman and, after John Candelaria struck
out, Frank Taveras singled to center field, with Hebner advancing to
second. Rennie Stennett then roped a double to left-center, scoring both
Hebner and Taveras to tie the game.
But Montreal regained the lead in the sixth. Foli led off with a single
and Valentine drew a free pass from Candelaria, putting runners on first and
second. Earl Williams lifted a fly to right for the first out, but Foli
advanced to third on the play. Barry Foote then rolled into a fielder's
choice, forcing Valentine at second, but Foli scored on the play to give the
Expos a 3-2 lead.
It was still 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, with both starters still in the
game. But Duffy Dyer pinch hit for Candelaria leading off the inning and
reached on an error charged to third baseman Larry Parrish. Miguel Dilone
came on to run for Dyer. Taveras popped up for the first out but Stennett
rocketed a double into the left field corner, scoring the speedy Dilone all the
way from first base to tie the game. Fryman walked Richie Zisk
intentionally so that the southpaw could face lefty swinging Willie Stargell;
Omar Moreno ran for Zisk. But the Pirates first baseman foiled the
strategy by dropping a single into right field, scoring Stennett with the
go-ahead run. Moreno took third and Stargell second on the throw. Dave
Parker rolled back to the mound, with the runners holding, for the first out of
the inning and Bill Robinson was given an intentional free pass to load the
bases. Steve Dunning was then called upon to replace Fryman to face the
right-handed Manny Sanguillen. But again the strategy failed; Sanguillen
lined a single to right, scoring Moreno to make it 5-3. Hebner, the ninth
batter of the inning, drew a five-pitch walk, forcing home a run to give the
Pirates a 6-3 advantage. Dilone followed with a single to right, scoring
two more runs and leaving runners on first and third. That was the end of
the day for Dunning; he was replaced on the mound by Joe Kerrigan, but it didn't
get any better immediately for the Expos. Taveras singled home Hebner with
the seventh run of the inning, making it 9-3 and Stennett followed with his
second two-bagger of the frame, driving home two more runs. Moreno drove
home Stennett with a single to right before Stargell finally grounded out to
first to end the inning.
In all, the Pirates scored 10 runs in the seventh inning, sending 14 batters to
the plate. At one point, seven straight Pittsburgh hitters reached base
safely.
