CLEVELAND'S GEM LEADS BOSOX PAST RANGERS
Loses No-Hitter in 8th
BOSTON, Aug. 31 (AP) - Reggie Cleveland fired a complete game two-hit shutout,
leading the Boston Red Sox past the Texas Rangers 1-0 at Fenway Park. The
Red Sox have won two 1-0 games at home this year--the first was on May 28--and
Cleveland has been the starter in both of them. Cleveland is the first
Boston pitcher this year to throw a complete game and allow fewer than four
hits.
The Rangers wasted a fine effort by starter Nelson Briles, who allowed only one
run on five hits and a walk while striking out four in 7-2/3 innings.
The Red Sox scored the game's only run in the sixth. Bob Heise led off
with a single and, after Butch Hobson struck out, Denny Doyle's slow roller to
short moved Heise to third with two down. Fred Lynn singled to left-center
on the first pitch he saw from Briles, scoring Heise but Lynn was called out at
second while trying to advance on the throw to the plate to end the frame.
Cleveland took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, allowing only two walks--to
Mike Hargrove with two outs in the first and Juan Beniquez leading off the
sixth--along the way. In the eighth, Tom Grieve flied out to open the
frame but Roy Howell slapped a single through the middle to end the no-hit
bid. In a one-run game Cleveland showed his poise by striking out Lenny
Randle and retiring Beniquez on a swinging bunt to avoid any damage.
In the bottom of the eighth, Briles walked Rick Burleson with two outs and was
replaced on the mound by Joe Hoerner who retired Denny Doyle on a grounder back
to the box to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Cleveland yielded a lead-off single to Jim Sundberg who
was replaced on first base by pinch runner Gene Clines. Joe Lahoud pinch
hit for Danny Thompson and flied to center for the first out. Toby Harrah
struck out but Hargrove drew a five-pitch walk. With action in the bullpen
and the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base Cleveland induced Jeff
Burroughs to fly out to center to end the game.
