CUBS, REDS COMBINE FOR 9 HRS
Reds Face 1st 4-Game 'L' Streak
CHICAGO, Aug. 10 (AP) - The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds set a major league
season high for home runs in a game, combining for nine long balls as the Cubs
outscored the Reds, 14-9, at Wrigley Field. Rick Monday hit one of
Chicago's five home runs and became the first player in the major leagues this
season to reach the 30-home run threshold. Joe Morgan of the Reds and
Jerry Morales of the Cubs pounded a pair of roundtrippers apiece.
The Reds took a quick 3-0 lead off Cubs starter Ray Burris in the top of the
first. Pete Rose and Ken Griffey led off the game with consecutive singles
and Morgan drilled a 2-2 pitch onto the catwalk down the right field line for
his 24th home run of the year.
But the Cubs answered immediately. Monday led off with a single on the
second pitch he saw from Reds starter Gary Nolan and Jose Cardenal doubled him
home. One out later Morales dropped a single into right field, scoring
Cardenal with Morales advancing to second on the throw. Pete LaCock's fly
to center advanced Cardenal to third and Manny Trillo rolled a base hit into
right, scoring Morales to knot the score.
Cincinnati regained the lead in the third. George Foster's 29th homer of
the season led off the inning and, one out later, Johnny Bench singled, stole
second base and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Tony Perez and the Reds
led 5-3.
The Cubs answered--and then some--in the home half of the frame. Morales
belted a lead-off homer into the left field bleachers to make it 5-4.
LaCock followed with a single to left and, after Trillo flied out, Steve Swisher
deposited an 0-2 pitch into the seats in left-center, putting the Cubs on top
6-5. If that wasn't enough, following Mick Kellher's ground out, Burris
hit the third long ball of the inning for the Cubs, also on an 0-2 pitch.
Reds manager Sparky Anderson had seen enough and replaced Nolan with Pat Zachry
who yielded a walk to Monday and a single to Cardenal before finally escaping
the inning by retiring Bill Madlock on a fly ball.
After Burris held the Reds scoreless in the top of the fourth, the Cubs blew the
game open with a five-run bottom half. Morales led off with his third hit
of the contest, a single to center, and stole second. LaCock's grounder to
second advanced the runner to third and Trillo put the Cubs up 8-5 with a double
to left. Swisher then dropped a single into left-center, plating Trillo.
Zachry nabbed Kelleher's liner for the second out but Burris again aided his own
cause, keeping the inning alive with a base hit. Monday then unloaded his
thirtieth home run of the season, a three-run no doubter that nearly carried
onto Sheffield Avenue, putting Chicago ahead, 12-5.
The Reds edged a run closer in the fifth when Foster singled and scored on
Perez's two-out double, but the Cubs again did them one better when Madlock
singled and rode home on Morales' second homer of the game in the bottom half of
the inning.
With the score now 14-6 and the outcome all but decided, Cincinnati scored
consolation runs in the eighth and ninth innings on, what else, home runs.
Dave Concepcion went deep with a solo shot in the eighth and Morgan hit his
second of the game in the ninth, with a man aboard. Both long balls were
hit off Paul Reuschel and accounted for the 14-9 final.
The previous high for home runs in a single game was seven, in a contest between
the Phillies and Mets on May 25.
The 20 hits amassed by the Cubs was the team's most in a single game this year.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Reds, their longest losing streak of
the season thus far.
