COOPER, DOYLE HELP BOSOX PUMMEL BREWERS
9 Straight Batters Reach in 8-Run 6th
BOSTON, Aug. 6 (AP) - Cecil Cooper hit a pair of three-run home runs and Denny
Dolyle went five-for-five to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 14-3 thrashing of the
Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park. The Red Sox were coming off a pair of
lopsided losses at Detroit but bounced back in fine fashion; the 14 runs
represented the largest tally for the team since defeating the Royals, 15-4, on
July 15 at Kansas City.
Boston broke open a competitive game with an eight-run sixth inning, the largest
run output in a single frame for the Red Sox this year. In that inning,
Boston matched a major league high when nine consecutive batters reached base
safely. The Red Sox had accomplished this feat previously, in an April 13
victory over Cleveland. The only other team to do so was the Detroit
Tigers, in a shutout of Milwaukee on May 31.
The Brewers actually scored first, tallying two runs off Rick Wise in the top of
the first inning on an RBI double off the bat of Mike Hegan and a run-scoring
single produced by Sixto Lezcano.
But the Red Sox roared back in the home half of the opening frame. Rick
Burleson, Doyle and Fred Lynn banged out consecutive singles, cutting the
deficit to 2-1 and two outs later Cooper unloaded a three-run home run off
Milwaukee starter Jim Colborn to put Boston on top 4-2.
The Red Sox added a run in the fourth when Doyle's single drove home Bob
Montgomery, who had reached on a base hit to lead off the inning. The
Brewers edged to within 5-3 in the fifth when Robin Yount tripled and scored on
Hegan's single. Boston made it 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Butch
Hobson tripled and scored when reliever Ray Sadecki was called for a balk after
dropping the ball in the midst of his delivery.
In the sixth, the Red Sox blew the game open for good. Reliever Pete
Broberg retired Burleson on a fly ball to center, yielded a base hit to Doyle
then retired Lynn on a grounder to short, with Doyle taking second. But
the third out of the inning simply wouldn't come for Broberg and the
Brewers. Broberg fell behind Carl Yastrzemski 3-0 and then issued an
intentional ball four. But Jim Rice followed by grounding a single to
center, scoring Doyle and advancing Yastrzemski to second. Cooper then
cracked his second three-run home run of the game, just inside the Pesky Pole
down the right field line, giving Boston a 10-3 advantage. It was only the
fifth time a player had hit two three-run home runs in the same major league
this season. Cooper's six runs batted in are the top mark for a Red Sox
batter this year. Rick Miller, Hobson and Montgomery all banged out
singles, with Montgomery's driving in the run that made the score 11-3.
Burleson walked and Broberg was finally lifted in favor of Bill Castro who
yielded a two-run bases loaded single to Doyle--the second baseman's fifth hit
in as many at bats for the game. Lynn capped the scoring with another base
hit, driving home Burleson with the 14th Boston run of the contest.
Yastrzemski--the 13th batter of the inning--finally ended the frame by lining to
Von Joshua in left field.
The 19 hits accumulated by the Red Sox fell one short of the club's season high;
Boston banged out 20 safeties on both April 11 and July 15. The 16 singles
managed by the Red Sox ties the club's top mark set on May 9, in a 13-3 pasting
of the Texas Rangers. The major league high for singles (19) was set by
the Chicago White Sox on April 18, against the Red Sox. The White Sox also
hold the single-game mark for overall hits (23), set the same day.
