KOOSMAN DOMINANT IN 2-HIT WIN OVER PHILS
Millan Secures 3rd 4+ Hit Game
NEW YORK, July 30 (AP) - Jerry Koosman fired a complete game two-hitter to lead
the New York Mets past the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-1, at Shea Stadium. It
was the sixth win in the last seven decisions for Koosman who dropped his earned
run average to 2.80, its lowest mark since late May. Feilix Millan banged
out four hits, the third time he's amassed at least four safeties in a single
game since June 20. Millan and former teammate Del Unser are the only Mets
players with three games in which at least four hits have been amassed this
year.
Millan's six-hit game on July 11 is the high mark for a major leaguer this
season.
The Mets made quick work of Phillies starter Jim Kaat, bouncing him from the
game in the third inning. In the second, Koosman opened the scoring with a
line drive single, scoring Roy Staiger who had reached base by drawing a
walk. In the third, New York erupted for four runs. Bruce Boisclair
opened the frame by bouncing a single into left field. John Milner then
drew a walk when Kaat missed with a 3-2 pitch. Joe Torre's sacrifice moved
the runners to second and third with one out and, after Kaat fell behind Jerry
Grote, he walked the Mets catcher intentionally, loading the bases for Staiger.
But, on the very first pitch, the third baseman drilled a double into the
left-center field gap, scoring Boisclair and Milner and chasing Grote to
third. Millan then singled sharply through the box, scoring Grote to make
it 4-0 with Staiger stopping at third. Bud Harrelson roped a single
to left-center capping the inning's scoring with New York on top 5-0, ending
Kaat's day in the process.
That was more than enough for Koosman who retired the first 13 batters he faced
before surrendering a solo home run to Ollie Brown with one out in the fifth
inning. The Mets left-hander then set down the next 13 batters he faced
before yielding a meaningless two-out single to Dave Cash in the ninth.
Koosman ended the game with a flourish, striking out Larry Bowa for the third
time in the game to close out the contest.
The Mets added a sixth run in the fourth when Grote singled home Boisclair.
Another run scored in the seventh when Koosman drove home his second run of the
game with a single and the final tally was recorded in the eighth when Torre and
Grote hit back-to-back doubles.
