JONES OUT-DUELS CARLTON...BARELY
Potential Tying Run Thrown Out at Plate in 9th

SAN DIEGO, July 20 (AP) - Not every pitching match-up that looks good on paper lives up to its billing on the field.  But when Steve Carlton of the Phillies and Randy Jones of the Padres--two Cy Young Award candidates--went face-to-face at San Diego Stadium no one had reason to feel let down.  San Diego defeated Philadelphia, 1-0, when the Padres scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Jones (14-7) got the win, shutting out the Phillies on six hits.  Carlton was the hard luck loser, surrendering just six hits in seven innings while striking out eight, allowing just one unearned run.  Neither team managed a single extra base hit in the contest.

The Phillies had a chance to take the lead in the top of the first when Dave Cash led off by grounding a single through the box and stole second base.  But Larry Bowa's sacrifice attempt was popped up for the first out and Schmidt grounded to second advancing Cash to third.  Jones then ended the inning by inducing a fly ball to center off the bat of Greg Luzinski.

In the bottom of the first, Carlton worked out of a two-on, two-out situation.  He walked Johnny Grubb to open the inning, then retired Tito Fuentes and Willie Davis, but surrendered a base hit to Dave Winfield, leaving runners on first and second.  Mike Ivie, however, rolled out to second, ending the threat.

From that point on, neither pitcher allowed a baserunner past first until the bottom of the sixth.  Once again, Carlton walked Grubb to open the frame.  Fuentes sacrificed the runner to second and Carlton then fanned Davis for the third time in the game.  That brought Winfield to the plate and he bounced a routine grounder to Schmidt at third.  Schmidt handled the ball cleanly and then proceeded to airmail the throw over the head of Dick Allen at first base.  Grubb scored easily and Winfield ended up at second.  Ivie then flied out to end the inning.

The Phillies threatened to tie the game in each of the final three innings.  In the seventh, Allen singled with one out and stole second.  Ollie Brown's ground out moved Allen to third and Jones walked Garry Maddox intentionally before fanning Tim McCarver for the third out.  In the eighth, Jones walked pinch hitter Jerry Martin leading off and Cash advanced the baserunner to second with a successful sacrifice.  Bowa's deep fly to center sent Martin to third but Schmidt grounded out to end the inning.

Carlton was removed for pinch hitter Martin so Ron Reed took over for Philadelphia in the bottom of the eighth and pitched around Grubb's third walk of the game and a Davis single to toss a scoreless frame.

In the top of the ninth, the Phillies had a golden opportunity to at least tie the game.  Greg Luzinski lined a lead-off single and was replaced by pinch runner Terry Harmon.  Allen then walked, putting runners on first and second with no one out.  Jones struck out Brown for the first out and then came the biggest play of the game.  On an 0-1 pitch, Maddox dropped a soft single into shallow left field.  Harmon tried to score but Luis Melendez, who had been inserted as a defensive replacement in left field for Grubb at the start of the inning, gunned the runner down at the plate for the second out.  Bob Boone then came on to hit for McCarver but flied to left to end the game.

It was the second shutout of the season for Jones and his league-leading 15th complete game.  For Carlton (14-3), it was his second consecutive tough loss after opening the season 14-1.  Carlton allowed only two runs in a complete game at San Francisco on July 15, but fell to the Giants, 2-1.
