PALMER 1-HITS HALOS
Jackson Belts League-Leading 19th HR
BALTIMORE, July 15 (AP) - Jim Palmer fired a complete game one-hitter en route
to his American League leading 16th victory of the year pacing the Baltimore
Orioles past the Califonia Angels, 6-1, at Memorial Stadium. It was
Palmer's second one-hitter of the season; he stifled the Milwaukee Brewers on
one hit on May 17. There have only been four complete game efforts this
year with fewer than two hits allowed and Palmer has half of them.
Gary Ross (6-10) took the loss again for the Angels; Palmer beat Ross on July
10. But five of the six runs yielded by the California starter were of the
unearned variety.
The Orioles seized control of the game in the second inning with some help from
the Angels defense. Lee May led off with a ground rule double to left
field--the ball was caught under the tarp--and took third one out later when
Andres Mora singled sharply to left. Ross struck out Mark Belanger and
induced what appeared to be an inning-ending grounder off the bat of Doug
DeCinces but shortstop Dave Chalk kicked the ball for an error, allowing May to
score the game's first run. Rick Dempsey followed by lacing a double into
the left field corner, scoring Mora and DeCinces to give Baltimore a 3-0 lead.
The Orioles all but put the game away in the third and, again, the California
defense played a key role. Ross retired Bobby Grich and Reggie Jackson and
it appeared he was headed for an easy inning. But May singled through the
left side of the infield and Ken Singleton dropped a base hit into left-center
field, chasing May to third. Mora then rolled a seemingly harmless
grounder to second baseman Mario Guerrero but he fumbled it for an error,
allowing May to score. Belanger then scooted a two-bagger past third
baseman Ron Jackson, plating Singleton to put Baltimore on top, 5-0.
Palmer retired the first eight batters he faced before walking Andy Etchebarren
with two outs in the third inning and he took a no-hitter into the fifth but he
walked Dan Briggs to open the frame and then allowed his only hit of the
contest, an opposite field single off the bat of Bruce Bochte, which advanced
Briggs to third with no outs. Ron Jackson then followed with a sacrifice
fly to left to score California's only run. The only other baserunner
yielded by Palmer was a two-out walk to Bochte in the seventh.
The Orioles capped the scoring in the sixth when Reggie Jackson crushed a
towering home run, deep into the right field bleachers. The long ball was
his 19th of the year, four more than any other American Leaguer to date.
The complete game by Palmer is his 16th, one more than Frank Tanana for the
major league lead. Tanana will have the opportunity to catch Palmer when
he faces the Orioles later in this four-game series.
