10-RUN INNING PACES BUCS PAST REDS
Match Season-High With 14 Runs
CINCINNATI, July 10 (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates scored ten runs in the fifth
inning en route to a 14-6 rout of the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront
Stadium. The Pirates became the first National League team this season to
score as many as ten runs in an inning. The New York Yankees, the only
other major league team to reach double digit runs in a single inning,
accomplished the feat with a 10-run fourth inning in 19-6 victory over Detroit
at Tiger Stadium on May 30.
The game was tied at two entering the fifth. The Reds took a 2-0 lead on
George Foster’s two-run home run off Pirates starter John Candelaria in the
bottom of the first. The Pirates knotted the contest in the second
courtesy of a Richie Zisk RBI-triple and Manny Sanguillen’s sacrifice
fly.
Facing Cincinnati starter Jack Billingham, Candelaria led off the top of the
fifth with a single to center and took second when Frank Taveras grounded
out. Billingham uncorked a wild pitch, advancing Candelaria to third and
Ed Kirkpatrick’s single plated the runner to give the Pirates the lead,
3-2. Al Oliver then roped a triple off the right-center field wall,
scoring Kirkpatrick with the second run of the inning. That ended
Billlingham’s day; Reds manager Sparky Anderson replaced the right-hander with
Pat Zachry who was greeted by Dave Parker’s base hit to center, scoring Oliver
and making the score 5-2. Zachry then walked Bill Robinson and Zisk to
fill the bases. Sanguillen followed with his second sacrifice fly of the
game, giving the Pirates a 6-2 advantage. The third out proved
elusive. Tommy Helms grounded a single to left, scoring Robinson with the
fifth run of the frame and leaving runners on first and second. Candelaria
then walked—reaching base for the second time in the inning—to refill the
bases. Taveras then grounded a single through the box, plating two more
runs to make the score 9-2 and Kirkpatrick followed by roping a double to right,
scoring both runners. That was it for Zachry; he was replaced by Pedro
Borbon who allowed a double to left off the bat of Oliver, scoring Kirkpatrick
with the inning’s tenth run. Parker hit a line shot to first that was
handled by Tony Perez to, mercifully, end the inning. Pittsburgh sent 14
men to the plate, managed eight hits and drew three walks.
Though the game was effectively over at this point, the Pirates added a pair of
runs in the sixth inning on Zisk’s solo home run and Taveras’ RBI
single. The Reds scored a total of four runs in the final two innings, but
came up eight short in the end.
Remarkably, this was the second consecutive game in which the Pirates defeated
the Reds 14-6. Pittsburgh used a 22-hit attack, backing Bruce Kison, to
beat Cincinnati and Gary Nolan on July 9.
