PADS BLAST 4 HRS IN ROMP OVER CUBS
Jones Tosses 14th CG
CHICAGO, July 8 (AP) – Four different Padres homered, three of them in a
seven-run second inning, as San Diego pounded the Chicago Cubs, 12-2, at Wrigley
Field. Padres starter Randy Jones (13-7) fired his league-leading 14th
complete game of the season en route to earning the victory.
The Padres entered the contest with only 40 home runs in 82 games this
year. But on this afternoon, the Padres hit more home runs in the second
inning than they had in an entire game (two) previously.
The Cubs actually took a lead when Rick Monday led off the bottom of the first
inning with his 23rd home run of the year. But the Padres blew the game
open in the second, and drove Chicago starter Bill Bonham from the mound in the
process. Mike Ivie and Doug Rader started off the frame with back-to-back
home runs, giving San Diego a lead that wouldn’t be surrendered. After
Fred Kendall grounded to short for the first out of the frame, Enzo Hernandez
walked and stole second base. Jones then assisted his own cause by rolling
a single into left field, scoring Hernandez to give the Padres a 3-1
advantage. Bonham then walked both John Grubb and Tito Fuentes to load the
bases, but Willie Davis lined to first for the second out. Just when it
seemed that Bonham might escape further damage Dave Winfield unloaded on a 2-2
pitch, driving a Bonham fastball halfway up the left field bleachers for a grand
slam and a 7-1 Padres lead. It was the first grand slam hit by a member of
the Padres all season. It also ended Bonham’s day.
If the outcome of the game wasn’t already beyond doubt, San Diego put it to
bed in the fourth. After Grubb drew a lead-off walk from Joe Coleman, Tito
Fuentes singled to put runners on first and second. Davis then belted his
second home run of the season on the first pitch he saw from Coleman. The
three-run homer gave the Padres a 10-1 lead.
Bill Madlock hit a solo home run off Jones in the bottom of the fourth and the
Padres capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
The win was the third in a row for the Padres.
