TRAVERS 1-HITS TWINS
3-Run 6th Breaks Game Open

MILWAUKEE, July 5 (AP) – Bill Travers tossed a complete game one-hit shutout as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Minnesota Twins, 4-0 at County Stadium.  Travers is just the second major league pitcher this year to fire a one-hitter.  Jim Palmer of the Orioles turned the trick against the Brewers in Baltimore on May 17.  Ed Halicki of the San Francisco Giants has the only no-hitter in the majors this year (May 23 against Atlanta).

Travers took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering a lead-off single to Craig Kusick, but Kusick never advanced past first base.  In fact, Minnesota never advanced any baserunner past first, despite being on the receiving end of four walks and a hit batsman.

The Brewers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third.  Art Kusyner and Robin Yount led off the frame with back-to-back singles off Twins starter Eddie Bane.  Don Money rolled into a 4-6 fielder’s choice leaving Milwaukee with runners on the corners and one out.  George Scott then laced a single to left, scoring Kusyner with the game’s first run.

The Brewers broke the game open in the sixth, chasing Bane in the process.  After Sixto Lezcano and Bernie Carbo opened with base hits, Bane was replaced by Steve Luebber.  But Luebber immediately walked Gorman Thomas, loading the bases, and Jack Heidemann dropped a single into right field, scoring Lezcano with the second Milwaukee run and leaving the bases filled.  Kusyner’s grounder to short forced Carbo at the plate but Yount drew a walk, forcing in another run and Money’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 Brewers.

Travers’ spacing of the six baserunners he allowed was impeccable; the Twins never managed more than one baserunner in a single inning.  The Milwaukee infield turned a pair of double plays, which also helped matters.
