UNDERWOOD, PHILS OVERCOME CARDS, HEAT
Redbirds Commit 4 Errors
PHILADELPHIA, June 26 (AP) - Pitching on a brutally hot afternoon, Tom Underwood
looked fresh as a daisy. The Philadelphia right-hander became the first
member of his team to throw a complete game shutout while allowing fewer than
four hits as the Phillies beat up on the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-0, at Veterans
Stadium. Before the fourth home crowd in excess of 50,000 in the past 10
days, Underwood breezed through the St. Louis lineup, scattering three hits,
walking none and never allowing a baserunner past second. Underwood
retired 10 and 12 consecutive batters at different stretches during the contest.
On a day that saw the mercury eclipse the 100-degree mark, the Phillies scored
all the runs they would need in the very first inning, thanks in part to a
porous Cardinals defense. Dave Cash led off by reaching on second baseman
Mike Tyson's throwing error and took second on Larry Bowa's single. After
Mike Schmidt was retired, Greg Luzinski filled the bases when he reached on a
throwing error by third baseman Hector Cruz. Dick Allen drew a walk from
St. Louis starter Bob Forsch to force in a run and Jay Johnstone's sacrifice fly
to center made it 2-0.
That score was intact until the bottom of the sixth when Philadelphia blew the
game open. Johnstone drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on Garry
Maddux's ground out. Bob Boone laced a single to right, scoring Johnstone
to make it 3-0 and Boone took second when Underwood reached on Cruz's second
error of the contest. Cash lined a single to center, loading the bases,
and ending Forsch's day. Eric Rasmussen replaced Forsch and promptly
walked Bowa, forcing in a run and giving the Phillies a 4-0 lead. Schmidt
then lined a single to left scoring Underwood and Cash to up the advantage to
6-0. Dave Cash's RBI single in the seventh capped the scoring.
The complete game for Underwood was his first of the season in seven starts and
and the complete game shutout is the first of the year for the Phillies as a
team.
