GARLAND STYMIES BOSOX IN O'S ROUT
CG 3-Hit Shutout; Jackson Homers Twice
BALTIMORE, June 21 (AP) - Wayne Garland tossed a complete game three-hit
shutout, striking out a season-high eight, and Reggie Jackson hit a pair of home
runs and drove in four as the Baltimore Orioles pounded the Boston Red Sox,
14-0, at Memorial Stadium. Garland becomes the second Orioles pitcher this
season to throw a shutout while allowing three hits or fewer. Jim Palmer
fired a one-hitter in a blanking of the Milwaukee Brewers on May 17.
The 14 runs scored represent a new season high for Baltimore. Every member
of the Orioles starting lineup had at least one hit as Baltimore bashed out 15
safeties. It was the second highest hit total for the club this season;
the Orioles accrued 19 hits in an 11-2 pasting of the Red Sox at Fenway Park on
May 29.
The Orioles seized control of the game in the second inning with four
runs. Jackson drew a lead-off walk from Boston starter Luis Tiant and, one
out later, advanced to second when Ken Singleton drew a free pass. Mark
Belanger singled to center, scoring Jackson with the game's first run and
advancing Singleton to second. Tiant then walked Brooks Robinson to load
the bases. Dave Duncan followed with a two-run single and Al Bumbry's
double plated the fourth run of the frame.
In the third, the Orioles doubled their pleasure, increasing the lead to
8-0. Jackson led off with a long home run, just inside the right field
foul pole, to make it 5-0. Lee May singled and, one out later, Belanger
doubled him to third. Reggie Cleveland replaced Tiant but immediately
surrendered Robinson's two-run double off the center field fence. After
Duncan grounded out, Bumbry mashed his second double--the third two-bagger for
the Orioles in the frame--in as may innings to up the advantage to eight runs.
The back-to-back four-run frames effectively ended the game. May's
RBI-double in the fourth increased the Baltimore lead to 9-0 and the Orioles put
up their third four-run inning in the fifth. With one out, Duncan was hit
by a pitch and, after Bumbry grounded out, consecutive singles by Paul Blair and
Bobby Grich made it 10-0. Tom Murphy replaced Cleveland and Reggie Jackson
greeted him with his second home run of the contest. The three-run shot
landed nearly halfway up the right field bleachers and increased the lead to
13-0. An RBI-ground out off the bat of Duncan in the sixth capped the
scoring.
Garland, meanwhile, was breezing through the Boston order. He took a
no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering a one-out single to Jim Rice.
The Red Sox didn't put together a meaningful scoring threat in the game until
the top of the ninth when they placed runners on second and third with one
out. But Garland earned the shutout by retiring Carl Yastrzemski on
shallow fly to right and Rice on a fly to center to end the game.
The two home runs by Jackson represent his first multi-home run contest of the
season and give him seven long balls in his last 10 games. The Orioles
right fielder homered in five consecutive games from June 7 through June
16--including several days when Jackson missed time with a minor injury.
The five-game home run streak, which came to an end on June 17 in a victory over
the Texas Rangers in Arlington, is the longest in the major leagues thus far
this season. Jackson is tied, with Graig Nettles, for the American League
lead in home runs with 14 despite having appeared in only 40 of his team's 62
games.
