BREW CREW WINS 8TH STRAIGHT
CG for Slaton; A's Drop 5th Straight
MILWAUKEE, June 13 (AP) – Jim Slaton fired a complete game two-hitter and
the Milwaukee Brewers won their eighth straight game with a 4-1 victory over the
Oakland Athletics at County Stadium. The victory allowed the Brewers to
complete a three-game sweep of the A’s, who have now dropped five consecutive
contests.
The game was the low-hit contest of the season for the Brewers, who now hold
sole possession of second place in the American League East. The A’s
have seen their lead in the AL West drop to 2 ˝ games.
Oakland drew first blood with a run in the second. Sal Bando singled with
one out and stole second base. Gene Tenace’s deep fly to right allowed
Bando to advance to third. Billy Williams was walked intentionally and
then, with runners on first and second and Phil Garner at the plate, Slaton
dropped the ball while on the pitching rubber. The balk allowed Bando to
score and the A’s led, 1-0.
Oakland starter Mike Torrez made the lead hold up until the sixth, when the
Brewers tied the game. George Scott led off the inning with a single and
moved to second when right fielder Don Baylor misplayed the ball. Sixto
Lezcano’s sacrifice moved Scott to third and Robin Yount lifted a sacrifice
fly to center, tying the game.
The Brewers seized firm control of the game in the seventh. Charlie Moore
drew a lead-off walk, and Tim Johnson’s sacrifice bunt attempt was so good, it
went for a single, giving Milwaukee runners on first and second. Von
Joshua then dropped down a successful sacrifice, moving runners to second and
third with one out. Rollie Fingers then replaced Torrez, but the Brewers
didn’t skip a beat. Don Money singled home both runners to put Milwaukee
on top, 3-1 and Bernie Carbo’s base hit put runners on the corners.
Scott’s sacrifice fly drove home Money and the lead was up to 4-1.
Slaton, meanwhile, was dominating the A’s. After the intentional walk to
Williams, Slaton retired 11 in a row. Bill North broke the string with a
sixth inning single, but was thrown out trying to steal second. That was
the last hit of game for the A’s, who never got another runner past second
base.
