PHILS EXTEND 'W' STREAK TO 12 WITH DH SWEEP OF CUBS
Carlton Now 8-0 After CG Effort in Opener
PHILADEPHIA, May 31 (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies extended their National
League season best winning streak to 12 with a doubleheader sweep of the Chicago
Cubs at Veterans Stadium. In the opener, Steve Carlton ran his record to
8-0 with a five-hit complete game shutout en route to a 5-1 victory. In
the nightcap, Jim Kaat held the Cubs to one run in 7 1/3 innings as the Phillies
came out on the long end of a 4-1 score. Philadelphia has used the long
winning streak to move out to a commanding 7 1/2 game lead in the National
League East over the second place Pittsburgh Pirates.
Despite the perfect record, Carlton had struggled at times during his first nine
starts. But he was consistently in control on this day, limiting the Cubs
to just five hits while walking one and striking out five, en route to his
second complete game of the year. His only real mistake was a home run
ball to George Mitterwald in the seventh.
Carlton's teammates provided more than enough offense. Tim McCarver's solo
home run in the bottom of the third off Chicago starter Rick Reuschel put the
Phillies on the board and Dick Allen continued his torrid hitting of late with a
two-run double in the fourth, giving Philadelphia a 3-0 lead. In the
fifth, Dave Cash's lead-off triple resulted in a run two batters later when the
Cubs couldn't turn Greg Luzinski's ground ball into a double play.
Mitterwald's home run in the seventh cut the deficit to 4-1 but the Phillies
capped the scoring in the eighth on Garry Maddox's sacrifice fly.
In the nightcap, the Cubs drew first blood when Jose Cardenal led off the fourth
with a triple off the center field wall. Bill Madlock's sacrifice fly put
Chicago ahead, 1-0.
But the Phillies tied the game in the fifth when Bobby Tolan singled with two
outs off Mike Garman and scored on Bob Boone's double into the left field
corner.
Philadelphia then surged into the lead with a three-run sixth inning rally, all
of it coming with two outs. Mike Schmidt doubled to left and Luzinski drew
a four-pitch walk. Garman then hit Jay Johnstone with a pitch, loading the
bases. Cubs manager Jim Marshall decided that Garman had lost it, and
replaced him on the mound with Paul Reuschel. But on his first pitch to
Maddox, Reuschel uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Schmidt with the go-ahead run
and advancing Luzinski and Johnstone into scoring position. Maddox then
lined a single to left, scoring both runners and giving the Phillies a 4-1
advantage.
Kaat, meanwhile, was keeping the Cubs at bay, but after yielding a lead-off
single to pinch hitter Mitterwald in the eighth and retiring the left-handed
hitting Monday, a string of right-handed hitters was due up for Chicago and
Phillies manager Danny Ozark decided to replace Kaat with Gene Garber.
Garber got the final five outs to earn his third save of the season.
The 12-game Philadelphia winning streak ties the major league high for the year,
originally set by the Oakland Athletics, who won 12 straight from April 17
through May 2.
