KINGMAN BELTS 3 HRS AS METS DUMP EXPOS
Swan, Lockwood Combine on 5-Hitter
MONTREAL, May 23 (AP) - Dave Kingman became the first National Leaguer to hit
three home runs in a single game this year, leading the New York Mets to a 6-2
victory over the Montreal Expos at Jarry Park. Kingman hit his three home
runs off three different Montreal pitchers and drove in four runs. Craig
Swan started the game for New York and worked seven innings, allowing two runs
to earn the win. Skip Lockwood closed out the contest with a pair of
scoreless frames.
The Mets took a lead they would never surrender in the top of the very first
inning. Mike Phillips and Kingman bookended walks off Expos starter Don
Carrithers around a Wayne Garrett line out, putting runners at first and
second. John Milner flied to center for the second out but Carrithers
walked Ed Kranepool to load the bases and then issued his fourth free pass of
the inning to Ron Hodges, forcing in a run and giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.
In the third, back-to-back singles with one out by Milner and Kranepool put
runners on the corners and, after Hodges flied out, a passed ball charged to
catcher Barry Foote allowed Milner to score New York's second run of the game.
In the fifth, Kingman led off with this 10th home run of the season, upping the
Mets' advantage to 3-0.
The Expos made a game of it in the bottom of the sixth when Jim Dwyer, pinch
hitting for Carrithers, led off with a single and then coasted home on Pepe
Mangual's two-run home run, chopping the New York lead to 3-2.
But, facing reliever Wayne Granger, Kingman led off the top of the seventh with
his second home run of the contest, giving the Mets a two-run advantage.
Finally, in the top of the ninth, Kingman and the Mets put the game away.
Facing Fred Scherman, Garrett drew a lead-off walk--the seventh free pass of the
game issued by Montreal pitching--and Kingman followed with his third round
tripper of the contest, deep into the left field bleachers. The two-run
shot upped the Mets lead to 6-2.
Swan pitched seven effective innings, holding the Expos to two runs on four
hits, but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth. Lockwood came on
and held the Expos scoreless for two innings, allowing just one hit while
striking out two, to earn his fourth save of the season.
