TANANA K'S 15 IN WHITEWASH OF RANGERS
Bonds, Torres Drive in 3 Each
ARLINGTON, Tex., May 22 (AP) - Frank Tanana tied teammate Nolan Ryan for the
single-game high in strikeouts thus far this year, fanning 15 Texas Rangers en
route to a complete game three-hit shutout in the California Angels' 6-0 victory
at Arlington Stadium. Tanana ended the game the way he started it,
striking out the side in both the first and ninth innings. He was pretty
effective in between as well.
In what may have been the most dominant start by a major league pitcher thus far
this season, Tanana took a one-hitter into the ninth inning, before allowing
singles to Gene Clines and Ken Pape to open the frame. Then, as if
somewhat annoyed, he stuck out Jim Fregosi, Toby Harrah and Jeff Burroughs to
close out the game.
The Angels scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. Dave
Chalk led off with a single to left off Rangers starter Bill Singer and Ron
Jackson followed with a single to right, chasing Chalk to third. After
Jerry Remy lined out to second, Rusty Torres lifted a sacrifice fly to right,
scoring Chalk and giving California a 1-0 led. Bobby Bonds then crushed a
towering drive to center field that landed in the batter's eye area of the
bleachers for a two-run homer and a 3-0 advantage.
The Angels tallied two more runs in the sixth, with Chalk and Jackson again
playing the roles of instigators. Chalk led off with a walk this time and
took second on Jackson's base hit to right. Remy sacrificed the runners to
second and third and Torres dropped a single into right field, scoring both
runners for a 5-0 advantage.
California capped the scoring in the eighth when Bonds' RBI ground out scored
Jackson for the third time in the game. The Angels third baseman had led
off the inning with a single.
Tanana was simply overpowering. He struck out at least one batter in every
inning and held the Rangers to three singles and two walks during the
game. After yielding a one-out single to Clines in the third, he retired
the next 17 batters he faced before surrendering another single, again to
Clines, leading off the ninth.
The shutout is Tanana's first of the year, but the complete game is his eighth
in ten starts thus far this season.
