PALMER FIRES 1-HITTER, LEADS O'S PAST BREWERS
May's HR in 2nd is Game-Winner
BALTIMORE, May 17 (AP) - Jim Palmer tossed the most impressive game of the
still-young 1976 season, firing a complete game one-hit shutout of the Milwaukee
Brewers in the Baltimore Orioles' 3-0 victory at Memorial Stadium. Palmer
took a perfect game into the sixth inning, allowed a lead-off infield single to
Robin Yount, and then retired the final 12 batters he faced. In all,
Palmer set down 27 of 28 batters, striking out a season high eight and walking
none. Other than Yount's single--a sharp grounder that was knocked down by
a diving Doug DeCinces at third but couldn't be played--the Brewers never came
close to a hit.
The Orioles scored the only run they would need when Lee May led off the second
inning with a home run--his second of the year--off Milwaukee starter Bill
Travers.
Travers, who struggled with his control, managed to keep Baltimore from scoring
any additional runs until the seventh. In that inning, Ken Singleton drew
a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second by DeCinces. Dave Duncan
followed by bouncing a single through the middle, scoring Singleton to increase
the Orioles' lead to 2-0. Tommy Harper then singled to right, advancing
Duncan to third and Mark Belanger's fielder's choice grounder forced Harper at
second but allowed Duncan to score the third run of the game.
Palmer simply stifled the Brewers throughout the contest, striking out at least
one batter in seven of the nine innings he worked. He reached three balls
on only five of the 28 hitters he faced.
The one-hitter is the first thrown by a major league pitcher thus far this
season. There have been eight complete game two hitters thrown to date,
two of them (Don Sutton of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Roger Moret of the
Atlanta Braves) tossed on the same day as Palmer's one-hitter: May 17.
