AARON'S 3 HRS LEAD BREW CREW PAST BOSOX
Milwaukee DH Ties Game in 6th; Wins It in 8th
BOSTON, May 16 (AP) - Henry Aaron belted three home runs, including the
game-winning blow in the top of the eighth, as the Milwaukee Brewers upended the
Boston Red Sox, 5-4, at Fenway Park. The three home runs tie Aaron for the
American League lead in that category with three other players. It was the
Brewers' second win over the Red Sox in as many days. Milwaukee battered
Boston 8-1 yesterday.
Brewers starter Jim Slaton was roughed up over the first few innings, but then
righted himself and ended up shutting out Boston over his final four innings of
work. Rick Wise tossed a complete game for the Red Sox in a losing cause.
Milwaukee broke out to a 3-0 lead early. In the top of the first, George
Scott singled with two outs and Aaron launched an offering from Wise over the
screen above the Green Monster in left field, onto Landsdowne Street, for a
two-run home run. In the second, Robin Yount's second home run of the
season, a solo blow, put the Brewers on top by three runs.
But the Red Sox stormed back in their half of the second inning. Bernie
Carbo led off with a double into the right field corner and Dwight Evans
followed with a two-bagger over the head of Gorman Thomas in center field,
scoring Carbo to cut the Milwaukee lead to 3-1. Rico Petrocelli grounded
to second, advancing Evans to third base and Mike Griffin drew a walk, putting
runners on the corners with one out. Rick Burleson then doubled off the
Monster, scoring Evans and chasing Griffin to third. Rick Miller's slow
roller resulted in the second out, but Griffin scored on the play, tying the
game. Slaton then struck out Cecil Cooper to end the inning.
Boston took the lead for the first time in the third when Carbo's solo home run
into the bullpen in right-center made the score 4-3.
But Aaron drew the Brewers even in the sixth when he drove his second home run
of the game, a solo shot with one out, into the netting just inside the left
field foul pole.
In the top of the eighth Wise retired Don Money and Scott on ground balls to
open the frame but Aaron belted his third home run of the contest to left to
give Milwaukee the lead, 5-4.
Eduardo Rodriguez came on for the Brewers in the eighth and tossed a pair of
scoreless innings to close out the game and earn his second save of the season.
Aaron is just the second major leaguer to hit three home runs in a single game
thus far this year. Sal Bando of the Oakland Athletics accomplished the
feat in an 11-5 victory over the Indians in Cleveland on April 24.
