CHISOX BLAST RANGERS BEHIND GOSSAGE 2-HITTER
16-Hit Attack; Bradford, Brohamer Homer
ARLINGTON, Tex., May 10 (AP) - Rich Gossage fired a complete game two-hit
shutout and the Chicago White Sox bashed out 16 hits en route to a 10-0 thumping
of the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium. Buddy Bradford and Jack
Brohamer both homered for the White Sox who currently stand second in the
American League West, trailing only the Oakland Athletics. The Rangers
fell to .500 and now rest in fourth place.
Chicago seized control of the game in the second inning with a four-run uprising
against Texas starter Nelson Briles. Bradford led off the frame with his
fourth home run of the season, a towering blast that landed nearly halfway up
the left field bleachers. One out later, Bucky Dent picked on an 0-2
mistake from Briles and lined a single to left. Pat Kelly then chased Dent
to third with a base hit to right-center. Ralph Garr followed by spraying
a single to left, scoring Dent and advancing Kelly to second. Jorge Orta
drove home the third run of the inning with a double to the right-center field
gap, scoring Kelly and chasing Garr to third. Carlos May's fielder's
choice grounder brought Garr in with the fourth and final tally of the frame.
Gossage completely flummoxed the Rangers throughout the contest. He
retired the first 11 batters he faced before yielding a two-out double to Toby
Harrah in the fourth inning. The only other safety surrendered to Texas
was Lenny Randle's two-out triple in the seventh.
Given Gossage's dominance it was unnecessary, but the White Sox blew the game
wide open late against Texas reliever Steve Hargan, who was forced to absorb a
beating to rest a depleted bullpen. May led off the seventh by drawing a
walk and stealing second. Two outs later, Bradford singled him home and
Brohamer followed with his third home run of the year, giving Chicago a 7-0
lead. May and Jim Spencer each drove home a run on a fielder's choice
grounder in the eighth inning and Sam Ewing's pinch hit RBI single in the ninth
drove home Bradford, who had doubled, to cap the scoring.
It was the second time the Rangers had been routed at home in as many
days. Texas was defeated yesterday, 13-3, by Luis Tiant and the Boston Red
Sox.
Gossage's two-hit shutout is the first such accomplishment in the American
League thus far this season. Ray Burris of the Chicago Cubs is the only
other major league hurler to carry out the feat; he beat the Dodgers, 2-0 at
Dodger Stadium, on April 23.
