RYAN FANS 15 BUT HALOS NEED 14 INNINGS TO BEST YANKS
Remy’s Single Scores Chalk With Game-Winnner; Yanks Fan 19 Times
ANAHEIM, Cal., May 5 (AP) – Jerry Remy’s two-out single in the bottom of the
fourteenth inning scored Dave Chalk with the game-winning run as the California
Angels won their third consecutive game, 3-2 over the New York Yankees at
Anaheim Stadium. Angels starter Nolan Ryan struck out a major league high
15 batters in nine innings of work but received a no-decision. Yankees
starter Catfish Hunter held California to just two runs in 10 innings of work
but was also long gone by the time the contest was settled. New York
suffered its fourth straight defeat.
The Yankees scored both of their runs off Ryan in the top of the very first
inning. Roy White tripled with one out and scored on Thurman Munson’s
infield single. Chris Chambliss dropped a single just inside the right
field line, advancing Munson to third and, after Oscar Gamble popped out, Lou
Piniella bounced a single into right field for a 2-0 New York advantage.
The Angels got both runs back off Hunter in the bottom of the second.
Bruce Bochte opened with a single to right-center and scored on Leroy
Stanton’s double off the base of the center field wall. Chalk’s
infield hit advanced Stanton to third and Andy Etchebarren drew a free pass,
loading the bases. Orland Ramirez followed by grounding into a double
play, scoring Stanton with the tying run.
After their early difficulties, both starters settled down. Hunter never
allowed another runner to advance past second base until Remy moved to third
with two outs in the bottom of the tenth before being stranded. Ryan,
meanwhile, seemed to grow stronger as the game wore on. 14 of his 15
strikeouts came after the second inning.
The Yankees’ best chance to take the lead in regulation came in the
eighth. Chambliss led off with a single and was replaced at first by pinch
runner Rich Coggins. After Gamble struck out, Coggins stole second
base. Piniella rolled out to first, moving Coggins to third with two
outs. Ryan then walked Graig Nettles and Willie Randolph to load the bases
but Otto Velez, pinch hitting for Jim Mason, struck out to end the threat.
Mickey Scott replaced Ryan to open the tenth and shut the Yankees out for two
innings. Jim Brewer fired two more scoreless frames and Dick Drago shut
the Yankees down in the top of the 14th. Dick Tidrow took over for Hunter
in the bottom of the 11th and subdued the Angels for three innings.
But in the bottom of the 14th, Stanton drew a lead-off walk and stole second
base. Chalk dropped down a bunt that was so well-placed that it went for a
hit, giving the Angels runners on first and third with no outs. New York
brought the infield in and it paid off when Ed Herrmann grounded to Randolph who
cut Stanton down at the plate, leaving California with runners at first and
second and one out. Tidrow struck out Ron Jackson for the second out and
then Yankees manager Billy Martin summoned southpaw Sparky Lyle from the bullpen
to face the lefty swinging Remy. But the Angels second baseman foiled the
strategy, singling through the middle to score Chalk standing with the
game-winning run.
The Angels relief corps combined to fan four more batters, meaning that the
Yankees struck out 19 times in the game all told, four more than any other team
has fanned in a single contest thus far this season.
