ELLIS, PERRY BOTH GO 10 AS YANKS TIP RANGERS
White Plates Rivers with GW Hit
ARLINGTON, Tex., Apr. 27 (AP) - Roy White's one-out single in the top of the
10th inning scored Mickey Rivers with the tie-breaking run as the New York
Yankees slipped past the Texas Rangers, 2-1 on a steamy late April evening at
Arlington Stadium. Both starting pitchers--Dock Ellis for the Yankees and
Gaylord Perry for the Rangers--threw 10-inning complete games. Perry has
now tossed three complete games in four starts.
The Rangers scored first, pushing a run across in the bottom of the second
inning. Ellis walked Jeff Burroughs to lead off the frame and Roy Howell's
hit-and-run ground out to short advanced the runner to second. After Tom
Grieve flied to right, Roy Smalley grounded a single into center field, scoring
Burroughs to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees drew even in the fourth. Thurman Munson opened the inning with
a base hit and moved to second on Chris Chambliss' slow roller to third.
Lou Piniella followed with a double off the left field wall, scoring Munson with
the tying run.
New York nearly took the lead in the fifth. Willie Randolph opened with a
single to right and then stole second base. Jim Mason's sacrifice moved
Randolph to third with just one out. The Rangers pulled the infield
in--sensing that this would be a low-scoring game and that one more tally might
be enough to win it--and Perry retired Rivers and Munson on infield grounders,
quashing the threat and keeping the score tied.
It appeared that the Rangers would break the tie in the sixth.
Back-to-back singles by Mike Hargrove and Toby Harrah to open the frame gave
Texas runners on first and third with no outs. But Ellis rallied to the
occasion, retiring Burroughs on a fly to shallow center field and inducing
Howell to roll into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Chambliss led off the top of the ninth with a double to right-center field and
was replaced by pinch runner Sandy Alomar. But Perry struck out Piniella
and retired Oscar Gamble on a line drive to first. Graig Nettles was
walked intentionally and Perry then ended the inning by fanning Randolph.
The Yankees finally took the lead in the tenth. After Mason struck out,
Rivers looped a single to left and stole second base. White then drove a
base hit to right-center, scoring Rivers easily to give New York 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, Ellis retired Juan Beniquez and Hargrove, then
yielded a two-out single to Harrah. But, on an 0-1 pitch, Burroughs lifted
a routine fly to Rivers in center to end the ball game.
