HERRMANN LEADS HALOS PAST BREW CREW AT RAINY COUNTY STADIUM
California Catcher's 2 HRs Back Stellar Pitching
MILWAUKEE, Apr. 26 (AP) - Ed Herrmann hit a pair of solo home runs and three
Angels pitchers held the Brewers to a single run over 10 innings as California
defeated Milwaukee, 2-1, at a wet County Stadium. Herrmann--who doubled
for good measure--entered the game hitting just .115 but accounted for all of
the Angels' scoring. Starter Frank Tanana allowed one run on three hits
and struck out nine in just 6 1/3 innings but left due to a rain delay of an
hour and 13 minutes. He was replaced by Steve Dunning, who held the
Brewers scoreless over 2 2/3 innings, and earned the win. Jim Brewer
closed out the game with a shutout frame.
Tanana was remarkably dominant out of the shoot, recording seven of the first
eight outs of the game via strikes. But the Brewers got to him first, in
the bottom of the fourth inning, when Henry Aaron hit his second home run of the
season. The solo shot gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead.
Brewers starter Jim Colborn was every bit as strong and shut the Angels out
through six innings. But in the seventh, California finally drew even,
when Herrmann's opposite field home run landed in the second row of the left
field grandstand.
Tanana retired Aaron on a ground ball to open the bottom of the seventh, but
that's when what had been a light, steady rain turned into a downpour, and the
umpires stopped play. With well over an hour delay, Tanana's arm stiffened
up a bit and Angels manager Dick Williams, not wanting to take any chances with
his ace, removed him from the game and inserted Dunning. The right-hander
promptly retired Sixto Lezcano and Bobby Darwin to end the inning.
Dunning and Colborn kept opposing baserunners from reaching second through the
ninth.
In the top of the tenth Herrmann led off and drilled a 1-1 offering from Colborn
into the bleachers in left-center, giving the Angels a 2-1 lead. Colborn
then walked Orlando Ramirez, but came back to retire the next three hitters in
order to avoid further trouble.
In the bottom of the inning, the Brewers sent lefty swinging Bob Hansen to pinch
hit for Darwin. With a left-hander--Darrell Porter--on deck and only one
right-handed bat left on the Milwaukee bench, the Angels countered with southpaw
Brewer. Milwaukee then summoned Gorman Thomas to pinch hit for the pinch
hitter. The move paid off when Thomas drew a walk. Porter then
sacrificed Thomas, representing the tying run, to second. But Brewer
retired Charlie Moore on a fly to left and Pedro Garcia on strikes to end the
game.
