Robinson's Blasts Key AL Rout
Junior Circuit's 5 Longballs Capture Mid-Summer
Classic
WASHINGTON, July 15 (AP) -- Frank Robinson's dream season continues on a national stage. The Baltimore Orioles outfielder, who is having an MVP caliber year, had a possible preview today capturing All-Star Game Most Valuable Player honors in the American League's 12-6 drubbing of the National League at RFK Stadium.
Robinson, starting in left field to accommodate Oakland's Reggie Jackson, clubbed a pair of home runs, singled, drove in five and scored three times as the Junior Circuit rolled out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and coasted to the lopsided victory.
Facing NL starter Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants in the first inning with Rod Carew of Minnesota on second and the A's Rick Monday on first, Robinson belted a slow curve over the left field wall to give the American League a lead it would never relinquish. Two outs later, with hometown favorite Mike Epstein of the Senators on first base courtesy of a Tony Perez error--the first of four National League miscues--Boston's Rico Petrocelli ripped the AL's second home run of the inning, making it 5-0.
Robinson then assured himself of the MVP trophy in the second when, with two outs and Monday again on first, he crushed a Gary Ross fastball well over the left-center field fence to put his club on top 7-0.
The AL starting pitcher, Baltimore's Mike Cuellar, earned the victory with three hitless innings, continuing his regular season dominance. Cuellar has won 21 straight decisions.
The NL managed to squeeze a run across in the fourth off Cuellar's replacement, Andy Messersmith of the California Angels. Cincinnati's Perez plated the run with a bases loaded fielder's choice.
But the American League put any doubts about the game's outcome to rest in the fourth with a barrage of home runs, supplemented by more National League errors. With Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs on the hill, Boston's Mike Andrews reached on an error committed by Jenkins' Cubs teammate, shortstop Don Kessinger. Robinson followed with his third hit of the day, a sharp single to left. Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox then provided the coup de grace with a towering home run just inside the right field foul pole, making it 10-1. Oakland's Sal Bando followed with a long home run of his own to left and a couple of outs later an error committed by third baseman Richie Hebner of Pittsburgh allowed another run to score. It was 12-1 after four innings.
The NL pecked away, scoring five runs over the next four frames, but it wasn't nearly enough and the AL eased to the six-run victory.
All 66 players named to the two teams saw action. The last was San Francisco's Gaylord Perry. The star right-handed starting pitcher didn't get into the game as a hurler, but was inserted as a pinch hitter with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the ninth against Dave McNally of the Orioles. Perry, who has a home run on the season, struck out on four pitches.
