3-RUN 11TH GIVES AL ALL-STAR VICTORY
Bressoud's 3 Hits, Includes GW; Nets MVP
NEW YORK, July 9 (AP) - Eddie Bressoud tallied three hits, including the
game-winner in the top of the 11th inning, and the American League won the 1964
All-Star game by a 9-7 decision over the National League in a seesaw contest
played before a sellout crowd of better than 55,000 at Shea Stadium.
Bressoud, the Red Sox's shortstop, scored twice and drove in two runs and was
named the game's Most Valuable Player.
The game was a constant back-and-forth exercise in which the hitters
consistently seemed to have the upper hand.
The AL opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. NL starter Don
Drysdale hit Rocky Colavito with a pitch to begin the inning and, one out later,
surrendered a single to Elston Howard, putting runners on first and
second. Brooks Robinson drew a walk to fill the bases and Dick Green
followed by looping a single down the left field line, scoring Colavito with the
game's first run and leaving the bases filled. Drysdale then hit Whitey
Ford--his second hit batsman of the inning--to force in a second run, before
striking out Ron Hansen and retiring Mickey Mantle on a ground ball to end the
inning.
The National League got one run back in the bottom of the second. Joe
Torre led off with a base hit off Ford and after Ernie Banks struck out, Ron
Hunt lined a single to left-center, chasing Torre to third. Tony Taylor
lined out to Mantle in center, but Torre tagged and scored easily to cut the AL
lead to 2-1.
The American League immediately regained its two-run lead with a run in the top
of the third. With Sandy Koufax on the mound, Boog Powell drew a leadoff
walk and was replaced by pinch runner Don Lock. Colavito fanned, but when
Koufax misplayed Dick Stuart's roller to the mound, Lock scampered all the way
to third, leaving runners on the corners and one out. Howard then lined
his second hit of the game, a single to left-center, scoring Lock and sending
Stuart to third. Koufax pitched out of further trouble by inducing
Robinson to roll into an inning-ending double play.
The NL again got a run back in the bottom of the third. Johnny Callison
led off with a single off Ford and Billy Williams doubled Callison to
third. Robin Roberts replaced Ford on the mound and retired Willie Mays on
a comebacker to the mound before walking Ken Boyer to load the bases with one
out. Torre rolled into a fielder's choice, but Callison scored to cut the
NL's deficit to 3-2. Roberts retired Banks on a fly to left to end the
inning.
The National League took the lead for the first time in the fourth. Joe
Horlen of the Chicago White Sox came on to pitch for the AL and retired pinch
hitter Nellie Fox on a grounder to second but pinch hitter Dick Groat singled
and moved to second on a wild pitch. Denis Menke then doubled off the left
field wall, scoring Groat to tie the game. Callison grounded a sharp
single into right field, putting runners on the corners with one out and
Williams lined a single to right-center, scoring Menke to make it 4-3 and
chasing Williams to third. Lee Maye lifted a sacrifice fly to center,
scoring Williams and Ron Santo grounded out to end the inning with the NL on
top, 5-3.
The AL cut into that lead in the sixth. Bressoud and Tony Oliva smacked
back-to-back singles off Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants, putting
runners on first and third with none out. Robinson grounded into his
second double play of the game, but this one plated Bressoud, making the score
5-4.
In the top of the seventh, Mantle lined a leadoff single off Bob Veale, but was
immediately erased when Al Kaline grounded into a 1-6-3 double play--the third
twin killing turned by the NL defense. Just when it appeared that the
threat had been eliminated, pinch hitter Harmon Killebrew belted a long home run
that hit the back wall of the left field bullpen, tying the game at five.
The AL regained the lead in the eighth when Killebrew's Minnesota teammate, Bob
Allison, lined a home run into the seats right down the left field line off
Milwaukee's Tony Cloninger.
But the NL tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Roberto Clemente
singled off Wally Bunker to open the frame and the Pittsburgh right fielder
advanced to second on Williams' ground out to third. Jim Ray Hart flied to
deep left and Clemente advanced to third on the play. Henry Aaron was
called upon to pinch hit for Cloninger and lined a single through the box,
scoring Clemente and knotting the score at six.
Neither team scored in the ninth and the game moved into extra innings. At
this point, neither side had any players left in reserve.
In the top of the 11th, the AL finally seized command. With one out,
Kaline singled off Chris Short and Killebrew walked. Bressoud followed
with the big hit, a double that rolled all the way to the right-center field
wall, scoring both runners and giving the American League a lead of 8-6.
Oliva then singled home Bressoud for a three-run lead. Don Zimmer struck
out but Allison doubled Oliva to third before Kaat struck out to end the inning.
The NL picked up a consolation run in the bottom of the 11th. Earl Battey
fired wildly on Maye's swinging bunt, putting the leadoff man at second.
Fox's grounder moved Maye to third and he scored on Groat's roller to second
base. White also grounded out to second baseman Larry Brown to end the
game.
