STOTTLEMYRE 1-HITS BENGALS IN DH OPENER
Mantle Supports Effort with 2B, HR
NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (AP) - Mel Stottlemyre fired a one-hit complete game shutout as
the New York Yankees whipped the Detroit Tigers, 4-0, in the first game of a
doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Stottlemyre faced only 27 batters and
cruised to his sixth win of the season. Stottlemyre's one-hitter is the
ninth in the American League this season and the second by a member of the
Yankees. Al Downing one-hit the Los Angeles Angels on June 30.
Stottlemyre retired the first 14 Tigers he faced, but with two outs in the
bottom of the fifth, Don Wert lined a clean single to left-center field for
Detroit's only safety of the contest. Wert was immediately thrown out
trying to steal second base by catcher Elston Howard.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an unearned run. Bobby
Richardson led off the inning with a grounder to shortstop Dick McAuliffe whose
throw to first was wild. McAuliffe was charged with a two-base
error. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle then drew consecutive walks off
Tigers starter Dave Wickersham to load the bases with no outs. Howard
struck out, but Joe Pepitone lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Richardson and advancing Mantle to third. After Tom Tresh drew
Wickersham's third free pass of the inning, Clete Boyer fanned to end the frame.
New York added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out, Mantle drew a
base on balls and moved to second on Howard's ground out. Pepitone lined a
sharp single to right, with Mantle stopping at third and Tresh followed by
looping a single into shallow left-center field, scoring Mantle to make the
score 2-0.
Mantle then put the game away in the eighth. Facing reliever Fred
Gladding, Maris walked and Mantle drove a fastball into the bleachers in
right-center field for his 33rd home run of the season and a 4-0 Yankees
advantage. For the day, Mantle was 2-for2 with a double, a home run, a
pair of walks, two runs scored and two driven in.
Stottlemyre was on automatic pilot throughout the game. After his string
of 14 consecutive batters retired was snapped by Wert's fifth inning single,
Stottlemyre simply shrugged and set down the next 13 Tigers hitters in a row to
end the game.
