BANKS' 3 HRS LEADS ROUT OF BOSOX
Tribe Hits 6 HRs

BOSTON, Oct. 1 (AP) - Appearing in just his eighth game of the year, George Banks hit three home runs and drove in six, pacing the Cleveland Indians in a 13-4 shellacking of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.  Banks become just the sixth major leaguer--and third American League player--to hit three home runs in a single game this season.  As a team, Cleveland belted six home runs, tying them for second largest total in a game this year.  The Kansas City Athletics hit seven home runs in a 12-10 victory over the Washington Senators on June 21.

The Indians ran out to a sizable lead in the first two innings and never trailed.  Banks started off the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning off Boston starter Ed Connolly.  In the second, Tommie Agee drove in a run with his first hit of the year and then Cleveland starter Sonny Siebert helped himself with a two-run single.

The Red Sox cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second on Eddie Bressoud's RBI single.

But the Indians blew the game open once and for all with three runs in the sixth.  Max Alvis hit his 22nd home run of the season, a two-run blow, off Bill Monbouquette and Billy Moran followed later in the inning with his fourth of the year, a solo shot, to give Cleveland an 8-1 advantage.

Boston pushed back on Al Smith's pinch hit two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to 8-3, but that was as close as the Red Sox would get.

Banks' second homer of the game, this one off Dick Radatz in the seventh, scored Dick Howser, who had reached on an error, to increase the lead to 10-3 and Woodie Held's solo homer in the eighth pushed the deficit to eight runs.

Banks' third home run of the contest was two-run blow in the ninth, and merely added insult to injury by making the score 13-3.  The Red Sox scored a meaningless consolation run in the bottom of the ninth on Russ Nixon's ground out to account for the final score.

The three home runs and six runs batted in by Banks are both high marks for a Cleveland player this season.
