HOWARD'S NO-HITTER EXTENDS CHISOX 'W' STREAK TO 8
White Sox Pull to Within 3 1/2 of Idle O's
CHICAGO, Sept. 29 (AP) - Making only his second start of the season, Bruce
Howard fired a complete game no-hitter as the Chicago White Sox extended their
winning streak to eight consecutive games with a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles
Angels at a chilly, blustery Comiskey Park. Howard becomes the second
White Sox pitcher to toss a no-hitter this year--Juan Pizzaro turned the trick
on August 11 at Yankee Stadium--and the fifth major league hurler to accomplish
the feat.
After retiring the first six batters in order, Howard walked Tom Satriano and
Bobby Knoop to open the third inning, giving the Angels runners at first and
second. Los Angeles starter Dean Chance then laid down a successful
sacrifice, moving the runners to second and third with none out. Given the
significance of the game and the identity of the opposing starter, White Sox
manager Al Lopez pulled his infield in and it paid off when Jimmy Piersall
chopped a grounder to second baseman Don Buford who cut down Satriano at the
plate. Jim Fregosi struck out to end the inning.
The White Sox took the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out, Cam
Carreon doubled to right-center and scored when Howard aided his own cause with
a single, to put Chicago on top, 1-0.
The White Sox added some insurance in the fifth. Ron Hansen led off with a
double and Ken Berry's sacrifice attempt was so good it went for a bunt single,
putting runners on first and third with none out. Carreon's base hit
scored Hansen and left runners on first and second. After Howard and Tom
McCraw were retired, Buford laced a two-out single to center to plate the second
run of the inning and give the White Sox a 3-0 lead.
After the walks to Satriano and Knoop, Howard was flawless. Piersall and
Fregosi were the first two of 20 consecutive batters retired by the Chicago
right-hander. In his two starts, Howard has now allowed a grand total of
one hit in 15 innings of work.
The victory pulls the White Sox to within 3 1/2 games of the first place
Baltimore Orioles, whose home game against the Washington Senators was rained
out. The Senators and Orioles will play a doubleheader tomorrow.
Chicago has only four games remaining in the regular season, all of them at home
against the Kansas City Athletics.
