LATE CUBS RALLY SINKS GIANTS
3-Game Win Streak Ends
CHICAGO, Sept. 25 (AP) - The Chicago Cubs rallied for three runs in the bottom
of the ninth inning and defeated the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, at Wrigley
Field. The loss brings a three-game San Francisco winning streak to an end
and drops the Giants into a virtual first place tie with the Reds, pending the
outcome of Cincinnati's doubleheader at Shea Stadium against the last place New
York Mets. The Chicago rally was accomplished without a single out being
recorded.
The vast majority of the game was a pitchers' duel between Gaylord Perry of the
Giants and Bob Buhl of the Cubs. The contest remained scoreless through
seven innings but San Francisco finally broke through in the eighth. After
Buhl retired Perry and Harvey Kuenn, Hal Lanier tripled off the wall in
right-center field. Matty Alou followed with a single to center, scoring
Lanier with the game's first run. Willie Mays drew a walk and the Cubs
replaced Buhl on the mound with Lindy McDaniel. But Jim Ray Hart greeted
McDaniel by lining a single to right-center, scoring Alou and giving the Giants
a two-run lead. Orlando Cepeda flied to center for the final out.
The Cubs were retired in order by Perry in the bottom of the eighth and McDaniel
set the Giants down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth.
But the bottom of the ninth was a different story entirely. Perry walked
Len Gabrielson on four pitches to open the inning and Billy Cowan followed with
a single to left, with Gabrielson stopping at second. Pinch hitter Joey
Amalfitano then walked, loading the bases. Leo Burke was summoned to pinch
hit for McDaniel and the Giants called upon Ron Herbel to replace Perry on the
mound. Burke singled down the left field line, scoring Gabrielson and
Cowan to tie the game and chasing Amalfitano to third with the potential winning
run. Jim Duffalo replaced Herbel for the Giants and, on the very first
pitch he saw, Jimmy Stewart lined a single to right, scoring Amalfitano to win
the game for the Cubs. Five batters had come to the plate for Chicago in
the ninth inning and none of them were retired.
